“You’re the one who called a meeting,” Will reasoned, his chair squeaking as he leaned back in it. “We’ve all just been waiting on you, man. We all went and helped your lady friend move, the least you can do is show up on time.”

“Yeah, and you said it waspressing.” Axle rolled his eyes.

“Well, yeah it is,” I grunted. “And it’s about this cop that we’re supposed to be taking care of.”

“Figured it must be something like that considering you made me get rid of all the women.” Viper shifted on the bar stool as he brought his drink to his lips. “So spill. We’ve been waiting for you for almost fifteen minutes.”

“All right, well, sorry for not being punctual.” I rolled my eyes, but then got serious. “So that cop—the one we’re supposed to take care of—Robbie wants to pay us a hundred grand to off him.”

“What?” Viper raised his brows. “What do you mean? I already told Sarge that we weren’t gonna off him.”

“And he agreed that he didn’t want that done—not unless we had to.” Will narrowed his eyes at me.

I ignored the tension in the room. “I think we have to.”

“And why is that?”

“He apparently forced himself on his sister.”

“Robbie’s sister?” Viper was sounding less and less enthused by what I was saying, and I couldn’t understand why. Usually, he was the kind to demand vengeance. “They don’t even speak to each other.”

“How do you know that?” I asked, perplexed by the way Viper was arguing the notion.

“Hannah volunteers with her at the library. I know for certain that the girl can’t stand her brother. They don’t talk at all. She mentioned that it was strange, because her brother and dad—Sarge—are close.”

I paused, running my fingers down the denim on my thighs. “So what do you think? He lied? That’s a pretty strong assumption. We never take this kind of shit lightly.”

“I never said that I was taking it lightly,” Viper growled. “I’m just saying I think something is off. Bethany and Hannah are close. I think she would’ve told her what the fuck happened.”

“Then I guess the answer is to have Hannah confirm the details before we go killing a cop and getting ourselves in hot water.” Bear’s voice boomed out, catching all our attention. He wasn’t the type to get in the middle of things, so when he did, we listened. “We won’t give Robbie an answer until we can confirm it—and if we do, we ain’t taking no payments.”

“I think that’s fair,” I agreed.

“Me, too.” Viper let out a sigh, the tension melting from his face. “I’ll call Hannah and have her hunt Bethany down to confirm. Did he happen to give you any details whatsoever?”

I shook my head. “I figured he was keeping it vague for privacy purposes.”

“Or because it didn’t even happen.” Axle’s voice was dark. He was the enforcer, and the one that everyone knew not to fuck with. I might have served time for second-degree murder, but god knows what Axle had done in his life. He does all the dirty shit.

And no one fucking knows that he does.

Which is why Robbie came to me.

I shuddered internally at the thought, glancing over to Axle’s darkened gaze. “I think we should just not assume anything until we confirm.”

“Yep,” Viper huffed before sliding off the stool and heading toward the hallway. “I’ll go call Hannah now.”

“I think he’s full of shit,” Axle grunted as he stood to his feet, his lips stuck in a straight line. The man was hardened as fuck and went through women like they meant nothing to him. “You, let’s go talk.”

Fuck.

I stood to my feet to join him, my stomach knotting up. “Yeah, all right.” Axle rarely asked to talk to me, and the fact he was had me wondering what the fuck was up.

No one paid us any mind as we headed outside to the front porch of the clubhouse, Axle lighting up a cigarette and leaning against the rail. His dark eyes studied my face in a way that made my skin crawl.

“What the fuck is up with you?” He drew in a long breath.

“Nothing. I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.” I leaned against the rail, part of me wishing I could bum a smoke from him, and the other part of me knowing that I shouldn’t.
