Viper didn’t give me a chance to say anything back. “I know that you don’t want to press her, but it’s got to be done. I don’t trust Robbie.”

Her shoulders slumped. “I just feel like this is a really private matter. I don’t think it’s fair for me to pin her down and demand some kind of answer.”

Oof.

The argumentative tone in Hannah’s voice reminded me just how hardheaded she could be.

“You’re a fucking investigative journalist, just do your job.”

“She’sseventeenyears old. I don’t go questioning minors—and besides she could totally lie because she’s ashamed.”

“There is some truth in that,” I remarked, not having considered it.

“Shut the fuck up, Gunner!” Viper barked at me. “You’re the one who brought this problem to the table. We have to know the truth. Robbie is a backwards bastard, and always has been. Youknowthis.”

“He seemed genuine.”

“Yeah, and so was Ted Bundy when he lured teenage girls into cars,” Viper spat back at me, his tone vicious. “I want the fucking truth, and if neither of you two can get it, I’ll fucking take care of it myself. I’m not getting in hot water over some stupid small-town cop. We all know the repercussions of this. We’ve done it before, and it’s not happening again.”

Hannah breathed out a sharp sigh. “Fine.I’ll see what I can do.”

Chapter 13

Hallie

“Why?” Taylor asked, sitting across from me in my office. “I just don’t understand the why behind it. AftereverythingI told you, you’re still messing around with him. Even if he didn’tkillsomeone, he still broke your heart.”

I sighed, setting my homemade ham and cheese sandwich down. “I don’t know, but it sucks I haven’t heard from him in a couple of days,” I answered her honestly. “I just… I can’t tell him no, and we’ve been through so much—and after he came out and told me the truth about his dad…”

“Oh my god, you feel sorry for him. You’re seriously fuckingjustifyingthe fact that he stayed here and let you go.” The disapproval in her tone made me cringe.

“I mean, I just understand what that’s like.”

“Right, because you’re hiding his daughter from him—right under his nose.”

Tell me how you really feel, Taylor.

I bit my tongue, holding back a snide remark, because well, shewasright. “Our relationship has always been messy.”

“Which is exactly why you shouldn’t even be giving the biker the time of day, Hal. You should be moving on, and finding someone who can give you what you want.”

Great sex?

“I don’t know. Maybe he’s come around.”

“He hasn’t ‘come around.’” She used her fingers as air quotes. “The only thing he’s done is get out of prison and then decide to be a career criminal.”

I hated the fact that she made a solid point. “Okay, well, I’ll remember that.”

“They know where you live now,” she pointed out, swooping some of her dark hair off her face. “They can show up whenever they feel like it—and all your neighbors saw them move you in, too.”

“Okay, so then what do you think I should do? Move houses again? I can’t just run from him forever.”

She let out a heavy sigh. “I know you’re not in the right place, but maybe eventually it would be better for you to go back to the city. It’s clear that you can’t be in the same vicinity as him and not, well… You know.”

I groaned, my face heating up. “Maybe he’ll change his mind about it. He seems hot and cold, anyway. Like, he left so fast the other night. I thought he’d spend the night, but nope, right after a shower, he was out of there. He said he had club business.”

“Yeah, welcome to being a biker’s woman. They live for the club. I mean, I don’t know if you’ve met any of those women associated with the club, but they aren’t exactly unicorns and rainbows. I’ve heard some wild shit about some of them. Rumor has it that the ER doctor was kidnapped.
