“It hurts really bad,” Iris’s voice was quiet as she pointed to her stomach.

Karen gave her a warm look. “We’re gonna figure out it is and help you, okay? I’m going to get one of these nifty hospital gowns for you to put on.”

Iris furrowed her brow as Karen brought out a smaller, youth-sized hospital gown. “I have to putthaton?”

“Yeah,” Karen laughed, handing it to her. “I’ll let your mom help you with this, and then we’ll be back.”

“Okay, thank you,” I said, giving her a smile as she left the room, shutting the door behind her.

“Mom, I don’t want to do this.” Iris levelled with me, her voice growing with confidence. “I want to go home. I’ll be fine.”

I shook my head. “No way, young lady. You’re going to put the hospital gown on. I know you’re in pain, and we need to figure out why that is.”

“Okay, but we can just wait it out at home—that’s what you always do when you get sick.”

Doctors are expensive.

“No, that’s not what we do with you, though. If I was in the same kind of pain that you were in, there is no way that I would be staying at home.”

“Ugh,fine.” Iris somehow mustered the umph to roll her eyes at me, and I took that as a good sign. I helped her change into her hospital gown, noticing the way she winced as she raised her arms over her head.

Maybe I should call Gunner.

I bit my lip, never really having had that option before. I mean, I wasn’t really sure what he would do—or if he really even needed to know, anyway.

But he was her dad.

And as much as he had no clue, Ididknow, and it felt like he should know about her current condition.

But a hospital isn’t the place to tell him.

I pushed the thought aside as the door opened, and Linley, a younger, dark-headed doctor, walked into the room.

“You must be Hallie?” She greeted me in a way that made me feel like she already knew exactly who I was, her eyes lingering on my face for a little longer than a few seconds…

And I knew she knew me.

She was one ofthem.

I nodded, and she turned to Iris. “And you’re Iris.”

My heart jumped in my chest as Linley’s brows furrowed slightly, her face contorting in deep thought.

Oh my god, she sees her father in her.

Chapter 18

Gunner

My phone vibrated in my pocket, but I ignored it, taking a deep breath as I sat outside of Robbie Johnston’s house. The guy lived in a nice place, but not over the top. It was a lot like Francis’s, really—which made me think that either Robbie was like his dad, hiding his wealth, or he didn’t have any.

And either was a possibility.

“Come on, he’s been home now for fifteen minutes. Let’s just get this over with.” Viper sounded irritated as he tossed his leather vest into the backseat of my truck. We never wore our cuts when we were out on a job, just in case anything ever went wrong. Granted, people would always make their assumptions, so it was more of a technical kind of rule.

“Maybe I should go alone,” I said, giving Viper a look as he pushed open the passenger door. “He might not wanna talk.”

“No way.”
