She rolled her eyes at me, nudging me under the table. “You know what I’m trying to say.”

“I do, which is why we shouldn’t let this night end here at the café.” My hand dropped beneath the table, running along her thigh.

Her breath hitched as her pupils dilated slightly. “And what did you have in mind?”

“Let me show you where I live now?” I suggested, shrugging my shoulders. “The clubhouse is badass. I think you’d like it.”

Hallie pursed her lips at me. “I don’t know about that… I have to be home for Iris. I can’t just spend the night somewhere.”

Raising an eyebrow, I smirked. “I never said you had to spend the night.”

She blushed, her hand flying to cover her face. “Oh my god, that’s so embarrassing.”

I squeezed her leg. “Nah, I just wasn’t counting on being that lucky.”

Her hand dropped from her face. “Okay, well, we can just… stop by.”

I had no fucking idea if she was on the same page as me, but whatever time she was willing to give me…

I was willing to take.

Chapter 3

Hallie

I don’t know what the hell possessed me to agree to go to the Steel Heretics outlaw clubhouse on the outskirts of town, but there I was, climbing into Gunner’s truck.

“I can take you back here when we’re done.” He helped boost me up into the slightly lifted black half-ton. He patted my leg just before shutting the door.

My eyes followed him around the front of the truck, falling for every inch of familiarity he gave me. I had spent the last ten years trying to convince myself that he was just a blip in my past…

But the moment I was right back in it all, it was as if no time had passed at all.

“You good?” He asked me as he started the truck, eyeing me.

“Yeah, I’m good.” I reached for the seatbelt and buckled it, taking a deep breath as he backed out of the parking spot and sped off down the street. “You know, we did a lot of talking tonight…” my voice trailed off as I tried to conjure up what I wanted to say. “But you haven’t really told me anything aboutyou.”

His jaw twitched. “I don’t know that it really matters. I’ve just been in this same town for the last ten years.” There was something in his voice that left me thinkinghewas the one telling a lie now.

“So you’ve never left town?”

“Not really.”

“So, did you join the, uh, club as soon as I left?” It was a touchy subject for me, but I just… I just had to know if he had gotten what he had been so determined he wanted.

“Nah, I actually didn’t join it until a few years ago, actually.” He eyed me, looking away as soon as he saw my confused look.

“So then, what did you do during all that time? You were always hanging around the clubhouse with Ronny, er, whatever his nickname is.”

“Viper,” Gunner remarked.

I nodded, my heart tugged back to the memory of him losing his dad and brother. I had already left, but my mom had told me about it. “Is he doing okay?”

He nodded. “Yeah, he’s got a wife now—Hannah. I’m close to both of them.”

“That’s good.” I didn’t know what else to say as we pulled through heavy iron gates, the place coming into view. If you didn’t know what it was, one might think it was just a very large log-style house—with a lot of motorcycles. However, as he pulled up and parked tonight, the place seemed dark.

“Where is everyone? I remembered this place being packed, overrun with people.” I peered around, feeling a little eerie as Gunner pushed open the door.
