But maybe that was a good thing.

Maybe if I wasn’t head over heels for a guy, I wouldn’t be disappointed when shit didn’t go the way I wanted it to. Maybe I wouldn’t get so fed up that I break up with him when his phone breaks…

Ugh.I was still torn over whether or not I made the right decision.

“Perfect,” Robbie’s voice brought me back to the present. “I’ll pick you up around seven Friday, but if you’re not feeling well, just let me know. We can always do a raincheck. I get how it goes sometimes.”

I definitely will not be feeling well Friday.

“Thanks,” I said, eying my beaming mother.

“I hope you get to feeling better.” Robbie gave me a smile and then headed back for the door, bidding my mom goodbye on the way out.

As soon as the front door shut, I jerked the blanket back over my head and rolled to face the back of the couch again.

“What? Did you not want to go out with him?” Mom asked. I didn’t have to look at her to know that her hands were on her hips, and her eyes focused on me with a motherly stare.

“It’s really soon.”

“You weren’t even official with Gunner—and not to make any less of Robbie, but you need a way to get over Gunner, once and for all. He’s done nothing but hurt you over the years, and I can’t stand it, Hal. I thought he might step up, even with the motorcycle club stuff, but he let you down.”

“His phone was broken that night. It fell. He tried to show it to me.” I hated the fact that I was defending him, butugh.

“Oh… So why did you call it off with him if there was a legitimate reason? I thought he was just out doing whatever those bikers do…”

Yeah, like kill people.

“I don’t know. It was just my knee-jerk reaction after that night. I don’t know. It’s probably for the best, anyway. It protects Iris from that life.”

“Mmm…” Mom’s voice trailed off, and I peeked over my shoulder to see her thoughtful expression. “I don’t know. I’ve never liked keeping her from him. It’s never seemed fair… to either of them.”

“I know that,” I snapped, not in the mood for this conversation. “But can you imagine his reaction if he suddenly found out I had been lying to him?”

She shrugged. “You forgave him for lying to you.”

And this is why I shouldn’t tell my mother everything that goes on in my life.

“You signed me up for a date with Robbie Johnston, so I’d say that’s that. No need to discuss this any further.”

She rolled her eyes at me. “It’s just one date, Hal. And he even said there was no pressure, you could just hang out as friends.”

“Okay,” I said to her, hoping that would end the conversation. “I think I’m going to nap now.”

“Get some rest, honey.”

I stayed silent, burying my face into the blanket and the back pillow of the couch. Iris was already in bed, so my mom could easily leave and go home… But I knew she wouldn’t. We hadn’t always seen eye to eye over the years, but she was a good mom—and I had modeled after her when it came to Iris.

Maybe I should just tell Gunner.

My eyes stayed shut as my stomach cramped, and for a moment I thought I might be running back to the bathroom again. However, it passed and I relaxed, the fatigue replacing the pain. My mind ran back to the biker, second-guessing everything that had happened over the years.

“You look so hot,” Gunner smiled a toothy grin as I stepped into my room from the bathroom. “And your mom isn’t home, so…”

“So… We should probably get going. You said that we were going to a party tonight at Ronny’s house.”

“Yeah, and we can be late.” He stood to his feet, his emerald eyes raking over my tight black tank top and light-wash shorts. “Iwantto be late, Hal. I don’t even care if we go at all.”

“Mmm…” I pressed my lips together as I closed the distance, running my fingertip down the front of his white T-shirt. “I guess we could be a little late…”
