He was right, and I should’ve just hidden the wallet in my pocket. I should’ve jumped out and ran…

But it was too late for that.

“You couldn’t get me the loan for a hundred grand, so I had to take care of the problem myself—and it’s been killing me to keep it all in,” he began, letting out a sigh as he pulled a gun from seemingly nowhere. “See, Francis made a deal with a drug dealer in Oakland to work with the Silent Kings to run the Steel Heretics out—and it was solid. Until it wasn’t, that is. It left Francis and I to distribute what was left… But we accidentally took counterfeit money.”

“A hundred grand worth?”

“Ah, yeah, you’re catching on. Anyway, no one knew I was his silent partner, so I had two options: pay the money back or kill him. I started out with the latter, thinking I would use the money to pay the best hitmen in town—your biker boys. But they wouldn’t do it. So then, I decided to just use the loan to pay the drug lord back… But then… Francis was so fucking guilty, he turned the warehouse in. He was thinking the honorable move would right his wrongs—maybe gain him immunity—and we’d never have to pay the money back. It would just end with us all in prison… He was an idiot.”

“So you killed him.”

“Yep,” Robbie chuckled. “Just like that. Problem solved. Just had to man up and get it done. And you know what’s crazy?” He looked over at me, a devilish glean in his eye.

“What’s that?” I choked out.

“I liked it.” The sound of a phone ringing caused me to jump sideways. “Oh, look who it is. I guess he decided that even though you’re a lying piece of shit, he’ll still try to call you back.”

I swallowed the lump growing in my throat as he answered the phone, holding it out to me.

He nodded, mouthing, “answer it.”

“Hello?” I said in as shaky voice, which earned me a warning glare.

“Where are you, Hal?” The panic in his voice was frightening.

“I’m… Um… I’m… with… Robbie.” I struggled to answer him, and the amusement on Robbie’s face made me feel sick.

“Just tell me where you’re at.”

“Nah, I don’t think she’s gonna do that,” Robbie laughed, and I squeezed my eyes shut as a tear slipped down my cheek. I brushed it away, hoping that Robbie didn’t see.

“I’m gonna fucking find you andkillyou,” Gunner growled in a voice that I hadneverheard before.

“Good luck. I’ve got nothing to lose, and a beautiful woman to bide my time with.” Before Gunner could say anything else, Robbie hung up…

And then threw the phone out the window.

Chapter 30

Gunner

I couldn’t breathe as my motorcycle roared down the highway out of town. Robbie was a cop, and he should’ve known that we’d pinpoint the phone’s location. Of course, the phone hadn’t moved in the ten minutes we had been on the chase…

And I already knew what would happen when we made it to GPS location.

Viper pulled off the side of the highway, but I didn’t even fucking stop. I rolled my wrist and continued on, knowing that I was ten minutes behind wherever the fucker had taken her. She had stumbled into something she shouldn’t have, and he was going to eliminate the witness…

Even if the repercussions meant death for himself.

Coward. He’s a fucking coward.

But even with that knowledge, it would be a fucking streak of luck if I found him. He was taking her far into the desert, and it was no secret how difficult it would be to find the two of them once he veered off the highway down a side road.

This is what he should’ve done when he killed Francis.

But my bet was that he panicked when he killed the cop. Francis more than likely put up a fight—maybe not a great one. But still. Robbie probably thought it would be pinned on us since we were supposed to be scaring the guy. However, unlike his son, Sergeant Johnston had his shit together…

Mostly, anyway.
