The silence yawned between them as he waited nervously for her reply. Was it seconds? Minutes? He studied her face carefully, noting the tiny speckling of freckles across her nose. They had faded to a light brown, but he imagined what she would have looked like back when she was human, her skin sun-kissed and rosy from time spent outside. Her eyes, an intense glacial blue, had tiny flecks of grey swirling around her pupils that dilated each time she turned her gaze on him.

Excitement churned in his gut, and he watched her eyes dilate when his heart rate picked up. Perhaps that was why he wanted her - no one had looked at him with such heat or intensity for as long as he could remember. There had been plenty of lovers, but none had captivated him as much as this deadly little spitfire holding her own against him.

When he could no longer stand the silence, his grip loosened on her back.

He was ready to give up when she said, “You paralyzed me.”

Rolf grimaced. He had an excuse. He just wasn’t sure she was ready to hear it.

Adeline laughed but didn’t move from his arms. She rested her forehead on his chest and mumbled, “I must be a complete fool because here I stay even though you could have easily killed me.”

“I never meant to make you so weak,” his voice came out rougher than he wanted. Was this guilt he was feeling? Or was he just desperate?

His chest heaved with deep, ragged breaths, and he inhaled her scent again. It was fresh and sultry and reminded him of faraway places he had only ever dreamed of visiting. She lifted on her toes and tilted her chin just enough to brush her lips against his lightly.

A sound rumbled deep within his chest, and her hands curled into his shirt. He tightened his grip on her waist, hating the feel of the corset that bound her curves. Once she was in his bed, the first thing he wanted to do was shear the stiff corset from her body.

Adeline pulled him down to meet her lips fervently. Snaking her hands up around his neck, she pressed her chest against his, and though there was some give, he yearned to feel her naked body against his.

Yes, the corset will be the first thing to go.

Her lips parted, and his tongue swept tentatively inside, teasing. He flicked his tongue along her teeth, and she hummed.

Her hands slid down the front of his stomach, caressing the muscles underneath his shirt, down to the waistband of his trousers. Tugging upward, she freed his shirt and dragged a finger across his lower abdomen. Her hand was cool, and gooseflesh spread over his skin where she touched. Then she slipped her hand down further, cupping his cock firmly, and he groaned into her mouth. She squeezed him again, and he almost crumpled to the ground.

That’s it.

Breaking the kiss, Rolf grabbed her backside and hoisted her up so her legs could wrap around his waist. She gasped and flashed him a wicked smile. He couldn’t believe his luck as he took her in. Her lips were flushed and swollen, her glacial blue eyes blown wide with desire, and her dark, tousled hair framed her face.

He wanted to devour her. Every part of her. And never let her go.

“Well, then,” she said, her fangs sharpened to fine points. “What are you waiting for?”

It was the only confirmation he needed. He part-growled and part-laughed, giving her rear a good squeeze. He marveled at how his hands rested comfortably underneath her as he walked them over to the bed. He had been so lonely these past few decades, on his own in his cabin deep in the woods, living his life by as strict of a moral code as he could.

But now, he was stuck inside with this beautiful, complicated, combative creature that only made his basest desires hungrier—made him even more feral.

The deepest recesses of his mind knew he should not bed her, knew he should not imbibe in the fantasy he had concocted while he held her hand and watched her fight the dreams that haunted her sleep. But if there were ever a time to take advantage of an opportunity, only a fool would pass on a moment like this.

And Rolf was not a fool.

He was toeing the line at losing complete control.

Adeline let him carry her, his large hands cradling her against the flat planes of his stomach. His desperation rolled off of him in waves, and she wondered how long he had been here by himself. There were no other signs of visitors — of any kind. No women’s clothing, no differently-sized shoes. Only his set of clothing in the wardrobe and a few extra blankets.

And that mysterious army-issued coat covered in vampire blood. Which she was going to ask him about later, of course.

He set her down on the bed, and his fingers made quick work of loosening her clothing. Her pants slid off easily, and he tossed them on the floor. She started unbuttoning her shirt, and when their hands met on the middle button, he snatched her wrists and pinned them above her head.

Rolf covered her with his large body, his weight pressing her into the mattress. The bed frame creaked under their weight.

Adeline must have made a face because Rolf smirked. “Worried it won’t hold?” She shook her head, and his hands squeezed her wrists. “Good. Because if it doesn’t break by the time I’m done with you, it’s worthless.”

Words. She was at a loss for what to say. Had she ever been spoken to like that by a lover?

No. They had all been glamoured or too frightened once faced with what she was.
