She showed me the cover. "It's called 'Unhinged Witch' by Melody Caraballo. It's really good."

"I've never heard of it," I admitted.

"That makes sense. It's paranormal romance. There is this talking cat, and she is so funny. She loves meatballs."

I couldn't help but smile. She was always surprising me. "Maybe you can recommend some more books for me to read."

"I would love to," she said, her eyes lighting up. "I have a whole list of recommendations for you."

"You could bring them to our date tomorrow." I cleared my throat and stared at my feet.

"Huh?" She dropped her book.

"A date. If you want." I shuffled my feet. "You can swing by my house, and I can cook."

"Okay," Mal whispered.

"Cool." I picked up her book and handed it to her. Before she had a chance to change her mind, I took off.

CHAPTER7

Mal

I walkedby the hostess with butterflies in my stomach. I was heading to Matty's house as soon as I was done. He planned on cooking for me and wouldn't tell me what it was. Not that I minded. I was just excited to be around him.

"Are you leaving early?" Paula, the hostess, snapped at me.

"No. Sammy is just covering my side work." I stopped in my tracks, almost dropping my tray of food. "Why? Is everything okay?"

"Sure. You have to explain to Barbara why you left early, not me." Paula smacked her gum at me.

"We cover for each other all the time," I gasped. "I'm not even leaving yet. I'm finishing my tables."

"Whatever." Paula grabbed a few menus as a couple walked through the door. "I have work to do."

I ground my teeth and walked over to my table. The little boy sitting there practically jumped out of his seat when he saw the chicken fingers. I didn't blame the kid. They were delicious. I set the food down and walked away, still shaking my head at how rude the hostess was. She had never liked me, and I couldn't figure out why. It's not like I was popular and expected everyone to like me, but I never did anything to her.

We even went to school together. Last year when I started working with her, she seemed friendly. She had even brought up how I was in her calculus class. I mentioned to her how bad my grades were, and if it wasn't for Matty tutoring me, I would have failed. She seemed to praise Matty for being so selfless and then never spoke to me again.

Sammy thought it was all in my head, and that Paula was really friendly. Maybe Sammy was right, but it didn't appear that way. On the day's Paula was working, I got crappy tables, double sat, and other times skipped in the rotation. Since I couldn't prove she was actually doing it on purpose, I never brought it up to Barbara.

"Why the sad face?" Sammy tapped my shoulder. "I'm doing your side work."

"Oh, it's nothing." I smiled faintly at her. "I know you are, and I really appreciate it."

"I don't mind as long as I get all the details of you and Matty." Sammy scooped ice into a glass.

"You know if anything happens, I'm not telling you." I set down my tray and leaned against the wall.

"Come on. You have three hot, hunky, delicious guys after you, and you are gonna leave me in the dark?" Sammy filled the cup with soda and set it on her tray.

"I wouldn't say after me. I'm not sure what I would say. I'm just closing my eyes and hoping this never ends because whatever it is with them is intoxicating." I smiled and crossed my arms. It really was terrific.

"Oh, they are after you. I can tell just by the smile you have on your face." Sammy pursed her lips. "Look, I got closing tonight anyway. Go. I'll finish up your tables. Shower, shave your vagina, and put on something sexy. Maybe Rex and Jake will stop by, and you can lose your virginity to all three."

"Sammy!" I snapped. "You can't say things like that."

"Why not?" She scrunched up her face.
