"Would you like seconds?" he asked.

"No, thank you. I'm stuffed. This was incredible. I don't know how to thank you." I was rambling, and I couldn't stop. "I think that's the right thing to say. I just mean. Wow, Matty. You are like a serious super chef."

"Ha. ha. Thank me by coming to the lake house." He raised his eyebrows at me.

"Fine," I smirked. "How come you barely touched your food?"

"Uh. Sampling food while cooking can really fill you up." He pushed his plate away. "So, you wanna watch a movie? Or play a game?"

"A movie works."

Five minutes later, we were on the sofa with a movie playing. Matty and I talked through the entire thing. We avoided touchy subjects like, his parents and the future. He cracked jokes the whole time and brought up truth or dare. I laughed it off even though I was intrigued by the thought.

Once the movie ended, he just hit replay since neither one of us paid any attention to it. I yawned a few times and ignored how tired I was since I wasn't ready to end our night. At one point, he wrapped his arm around me and pulled me into him. I nuzzled in and drifted off to sleep.

CHAPTER8

Mal

Town Diner wasoverrun with customers. For a Wednesday night, it shouldn't have been so busy. Barb, the manager, only put Sammy and me on for the night. It was way more than either of us could handle.

By seven, my feet were sore, and I wasn't sure if I had given the last table lemons with their water. Sammy complained about how frantic it was, but I couldn't listen. All I could think about was this weekend and whether I should go. I had told Matty I would, but I debated backing out.

"Hey, are you even listening?" Sammy snapped her fingers in my face.

I shook my head, trying to focus. "Sorry, what?"

"I said, do you wanna come by my house after this?" she asked.

I nodded. "Yeah, that sounds good."

The rest of the night was a blur, but somehow we closed the restaurant in record time. We drove over to her house. I hadn't told her much about what had happened the last few days. I wasn't sure how to bring it up. Talking about boys was always her territory. She knew the basics but not the details.

"So, what's been going on lately?" Sammy asked, pouring a glass of water for each of us.

I shrugged. "I don't know. It's just. Uh."

"Okay, something is up. Spill."

"Where do I begin?" I took a sip. Tonight was so busy at work I hadn't had the chance to drink anything.

"How about the date with Jake? Did you blow him?" I nearly spit out my water, almost choking on it. "What? No! Sammy, come on."

Sammy laughed. "Relax, I'm just kidding. But seriously, how did it go?"

"It was amazing. We went to a fancy restaurant. He opened doors for me. Um. And we wenttothelakewhereiplayedtruthordarewithJakeMattyandRex."

Sammy spit out her drink. "Could you say that again?"

"You heard. And before you ask, no, nothing crazy happened. We stopped playing. Then yesterday, I had my date with Matty, and he tried convincing me to go to the lake house."

"You really need to give me more context. What lake house?"

I took a deep breath. "Well, Frankie rented a place for the weekend. All the guys are gonna be there."

Sammy's eyes widened. "And?"

"And," I hesitated, "I don't know if I should go. I mean, it's not like I'm really a part of the group or anything."
