Frankie. He stood there with a vein pounding in his temple. His jaw twitched as he stared at his sister. Yeah, she was covered up, but that wasn’t the problem. She was here, cuddled up with his three best friends. Although Frankie was angry, I could see the betrayal in his eyes. Years ago, we promised to stay away from his sister.

“What are you doing here?” Mal whispered. She sat up and stared at him with big, bulging eyes.

“Me?” He pointed to himself with an envelope he was holding. “You have the nerve to ask why I’m at my best friend's house! Why the fuck are you in bed with all of them?”

“We were about to go to sleep.” Matty shrugged, obviously not taking Frankie’s anger seriously at all.

“I’m not in the mood for you, Matty!” Frankie shouted at him. “I’m not surprised at Mal. She has been pining after you guys for years. Kinda pathetic, if you ask me.”

“Don’t talk about her like that!” I stepped around the sofa and approached Frankie.

“Oh, that’s cute. You are gonna defend her? You know it's true. She has been gaga over all three of you since we were kids! So, what? You three decided to take advantage of her?” Frankie took a step back from me as he was yelling, but he continued with his rant. “Let me guess, you guys take turns fucking her until you leave? Nice way to use my sister!”

“We’re in love with her, you dumbass! Have been since we were kids! We were pining after her!” Rex approached Frankie from the other side, fists clenched, practically foaming at the mouth.

That was supposed to be a special moment, and it was said in rage. Of course, Mal had to already know how we all felt. It was pretty obvious we were all in love with her. Why else would we so easily share her? There was also the fact of how hot it was to watch her be pleased by one of my best friends.

I had wanted to tell her I loved her for a while. Truth was, I didn’t know how to bring it up with all three of us leaving. It wasn’t fair. None of this was. Mal was a lifetime girl, not a summer fling.

“Great. Have her fall even harder for you three. When you guys leave, I’ll be here picking up the pieces.” Frankie tossed whatever he was holding at Mal. “Fuck all you guys.”

“Come on, Frankie. You’re being unreasonable.” I raised my hands to him in a non-threatening way. As much as I wanted to hit him for what he was saying, he was my best friend and Mal’s brother.

“Mal, get in the car, I’m taking you home.” Frankie nodded toward the stairs.

She grabbed her shoes and her purse. I tried to stop her, but the tears were streaming down her face. I called out to her, but she kept running. This was the one thing she didn’t want. Frankie was all she had left since she lost her mother and her father was never around.

Rex went to run up the stairs after her, but Frankie stepped in his way. “If we were ever friends, you wouldn’t go after her.”

“You need to calm down. You can’t stop her from dating us,” Matty said.

“Ha.” Frankie leaned his head back and laughed. “You think what you three are doing is dating her? She’s a placeholder for you guys until you leave. Just somewhere to put your dicks!”

My fist crunched into his face before I realized I had even swung. The blood poured from his nose as he stumbled back. I reached out to grab him and decided against it.

Matty and Rex each grabbed Frankie and steadied him. His hand reached up to his nose as he shook his head at me. Part of me was shocked I had hit Frankie and part of me wanted to do it again.

“You need to leave,” Rex said to Frankie as he was pulling him up the stairs.

I wiped the blood that was on my knuckles on the side of my gym shorts and stood there staring at the wall. Yeah, it felt great to hit him, but how was Mal gonna handle that? Her one request was that he never find out.

What was he doing here, anyway? The envelope in his hand.I went over to where he had tossed it at Mal and picked it up off the floor. In the upper corner, it read Riva’s Beauty Salon and School. Shit, it was her response to her application.

Instead of doing what I should have and chasing after her with it. I clung to it. At least it would ensure I would see her soon. Yeah, she would be upset about Frankie finding out, but it couldn’t last long.

Five days later, I still hadn’t heard from her. Nothing. I had called and texted her numerous times without a response. Going by her house would be my next move if she didn’t answer soon.

Even Matty hadn’t spoken to her. Well, not really. She only spoke to him about work-related stuff. Anytime he brought up talking to her about what happened, she would shake her head and walk away.

“Guys, we have to fix this.” I slammed my fist on the table.

Matty and Rex came by and brought a six-pack with them. I didn’t need any more beer. The past few days I had drank myself to sleep. Yeah, I knew it was bad, but I had to do something to stop the pain in my chest from the absence of Mal.

“Agreed.” Rex took a long pull of his beer.

“How? I can’t get her to talk to me and I work with her now.” Matty leaned back in his chair.

“I don’t know.” I shook my head. That was all I had been thinking about. We all knew how much she didn’t want her brother to find out about us. Of course, he did. It was bound to happen. Mal may not have realized it, but we planned on keeping her forever.
