"You have lipstick on your face." A simple scan showed it trailed his neck as well.

His eyes closed in irritation. "I refused her."

I nodded, but knew he saw my doubt. Or maybe it was the glitter to my eyes. He'd come with what I had believed to be sincerity, but maybe it was nothing more than grief and a need to fuck.

"I just want to be alone right now." It wasn't what I wanted. It was what I needed, though.

"I leave on a job tomorrow. Let me spend the night with you."

It wasn't as though I could stop him. Everything here belonged to him, myself included. "It's your home." The moment his weight lifted from me, I rolled onto my side away from him.

He sighed; his frustration evident as he lay behind me. Neither of us spoke for a while, even when he pulled me close to glide his fingertips along my arm. Maybe he'd hoped I would relax into his hold and fall asleep. That didn't happen.

Even after the lamp was off, the visual of lipstick on his face didn't leave my thoughts. His wife had been close enough to him for more than a quick rejection since lipstick trailed to his neck.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Armon

It was a long night in which we both feigned sleep. I hadn't drank enough to be drunk, but I had plenty that I didn’t consider how calculating Nikki was and why she went to the trouble she did to seduce me. The thought of what she did had me fighting the desire to go over and pack all her things.

Sweet didn’t believe me when I said nothing happened. She couldn’t be more wrong if she believed I would fuck my soon-to-be ex-wife. The thoughts lingered, keeping me up most of the night, knowing my Sweet One wouldn’t listen to a word I said.

When morning came, a knock and Cade’s voice woke me. "Armon, you there."

I groaned from the lack of sleep before realizing I'd missed my alarm and left my phone in my office. If I went back inside, Nikki would take the opportunity to corner me again, and I needed a clear mind before this job. I would wait to confront her until I returned.

I rushed from bed and found my pants, catching sight of Sweet watching me as I fastened them. I knew the red stain was still on my face. I also knew her attention was focused on it. "Whatever you're thinking, stop. Nikki knew what she was doing."

She nodded and smiled, but it was a weak smile laced with doubt. "I know." The way she looked at me suggested she didn’t understand this had been a plot to divide us.

"You don't know, and I don't want you to have to find out how petty she is." I went to the bed to give Sweet a quick peck that she reluctantly accepted.

Outside, Cade waited, irritated. "Paul and Gabe are inside sick, so I had to call Marko and Serge to stay here."

That was bothersome enough. “Sick?” I asked.

“They weren’t able to stand without a toilet nearby. They’ll be moving as soon as they are able.”

I blew out a breath and considered what he said. Katya needed someone to help her when she had anxiety attacks. "Katya?"

"She's fine to be here with the girl. Marko and Serge will check in on them." Cade said, still referring to Sweet asgirl. I was already irritated but knew I couldn’t take this job alone or cancel.

"Then we get my phone and get the fuck on the road to get this done quick."

"I'll get the phone." Cade knew all too well how capable of cornering me that Nikki was, so he already knew it would be best if he went in. "Baby oil gets that shit off your face. Some is in the master bathroom."

"My phone is in the lower drawer of my desk." I crept back into the room, but Sweet was already out of bed and in the bathroom. Even with the door closed, I heard her vomiting. Had my actions made her that sick? No. That made no sense. Only one thing made sense.

She stepped out of the bathroom, surprised at the sight of me. I couldn't dare say what was on my mind until after this fucking lipstick didn’t mar my face, so I rushed to get the oil and scrubbed it off.

When it was completely removed, I came out. She was already in bed, facing away. Nikki’s actions infuriated me even more. That bitch ruined the joy my Sweet One should be feeling. It took everything within me not to demand her to believe me.

"You're pregnant." It wasn't a question. The night before, her breasts had also been more sensitive to my touch. She even looked more beautiful than the evening we met.

She didn't turn around. "Stress. Nothing more."

"That is not stress. How long have you known?" I circled around to in front of her. By the way she studied my face, I feared there was more lipstick somewhere.
