Chapter One

Jasper

Jasper loved college. He loved drinking. He loved the freedom from the weightliving inHaxton held over his head, especially the darkness he had to immerse himself in when it came to working with his twin. He was happy with his decision to put off school for one semester. He was glad he could be there for Jace and Axie as they tried to save their little slice of the world. Still, the past year had been hard on him and the pack, the constant threat of retaliation from the evil men they were putting behind bars. Jasper was a naturally light person, sarcastic to a fault, and rarely took many things seriously. All those heavy days bummed out his very soul.

Now he was in Greenly, a college freshman, living with his best friend and his best friend’s mate. Jasper, Riley, and Blake had a good thing going. They studied together, they ate their meals at the dining room table, and they partied as often as they fucking could. Well. Jasper and Blake partied. Riley spent all his free time on baseball. He was so damn glad Blake was part of their world, otherwise he’d be feeling really fucking lonely. Riley was all business during baseball season. He worked out twice a day, watchedevery morselhe put into his body, and refused to stay out past nine pm before game days.

Jasper wasn’t sure he’d ever had that much discipline for anything in his entire life. He’d played ball back at St. Leasing, but even then he’d partied when he damn well felt like it and didn’t givetwoshits about curfews.

Right now, hewas sitting in English Lit, his least favorite class, andthe only one he shared with Blake. He was bored out of his mind. The poetry they were going overwasdifficult to understand. Instead of trying harder to concentrate, he let his gazewanderaround the crowded lecture hall. His eyes stopped one row down and to the left. Theredhead. He’d noticed her on day one, but she was shy and quiet. She kept her nose in her notes and didn’t talk to anyone. She wouldn’t be easy, so he’d passed her by for a quicker snack.

They were heading tothe end of the semester, andhewouldn’t mind something that demanded more effort. Like a final during finals. He snickered at his own joke and Blake jabbed him with her elbow.

He ignored her as he leaned forward. “Psst.” He waited semi-patiently as the cute littleredhead’s gazecut back to him before quickly looking away again. He tried again, smiling at her dismissal.“Hey.” What a nice change of pace. It would make the reward all that much sweeter. “Pssssst.” He let his low whisper draw out even longer this time.

She turned slowly to the right, her gaze meeting his, confusion behind those gorgeous green doe eyes. “Yes?”

“I’m Jasper.” He held his hand out, pulling his lower lip between his teeth when she simply stared. “And you are?”

Her smile was timid if not cruel, and hot as hell. “Not interested.” He snorted, covering the sound with his free hand when her glare narrowed and she shushed him. “You’ll get us in trouble.”

He groaned, unashamed. “I would fucking love to get into trouble with you, pretty girl.” He putouthis hand again. “I’m Jasper.”

She let out a huff, knocking his attention away with a flick of her wrist. “Callahan, andstill not interested.”

Callahan. That was a fucking mouthful. It suited her though. Prim, but unique. “Great job on that last midterm, I saw you aced it.”

In the short minutes sincehe’ddecided to introduce himself, he’d come up with a plan. It would befoolproof. Nerdy chicks loved to reluctantly tutor the gorgeous players. Every teen movie agreed.

“Yeah, thanks.” She wasn’t even looking at him now, her attention back to their droning professor.

“I heard you talking the other day. You’rein a study club?” She didn’t turn around and Blake elbowed him once again. “I was wondering if I could join? I’m nervous about the final and—”

She shook her head. “Sorry, it’s full.”

“Oh okay. Wellmaybe you could tutor me instead? I could pay you—”

“I wish I had the time, but um, I don’t.” The professor dismissed them and she was gone before he could even stand. He watched her hurry away, up the stairs with her books pressed to her chest.

Game on.

“Anyone naked?” Jasper knocked, opening Riley and Blake’s bedroom door with his hand over his eyes. “Not that I haven’t seen it all before.” He wasn’t an asshole. He gave Riley shit about the one time they’d shared Blake to show him it was nothing. That it didn’t mean anything. That he didn’t think of her the way he knew Riley did. Blake was his best friend’s mate, his whole damn world. And while Jasper loved Blake, cared for her the same as he didhis twin’s mate,Axie, there were no lingering sexual feelings. Even if he had been inside her tight ass all those months ago.

Riley grabbed a pillow from behind his head and launched it at him. “Hilarious.”

“I thought so.” Jasper perched on the edge of their bed, high-fiving Blake when she came out of the bathroom dressed in jeans and a croppedt-shirt. “We partying tonight? It’s our one free weekend until baseball season is over.” Once baseball season ended, it was time for finals.

After that, they’d all head back to Haxton to visit the fam. Put in someface timewith all the babies and go on runs with their pack. Jasper hadn’t shifted in over a month and his wolf had gone from feeling anxious and caged to forlorn and almost absent.

Riley groaned, looking across the room to his open laptop with the cursor blinking on the blank page. “I have a paperthatneeds to be turned in by midnight.”

“Then it’s just me and you, doll face. Yougame?” Jasper grabbed Blake by the hips and tossed her up the bed toward Riley, ignoring his packmate’s growl of protest at his hands on her. “We can get some drinks and you can play wingman. There’s this sweet, quiet chick fromourEnglish lit classI’vebeen itching to corrupt.”

Blake wrinkled her nose. “Callahan? The chick with the freckles?” When Jasper nodded, licking his lips,Blakethrew her head back laughing. “You realize you’re going afteran uninterested redhead, right?”

“So?” Jasper frowned, seemingly confused by her laughter. Callahan was gorgeous, and she refused to give him the time of day. He was primed for the chase. It’dbeen too long since someone required effort from him. Plus, she acted like he didn’t exist, which madehim like a dog, more like a wolf, with a bone.
