Killer:You have a pet rat? The beautiful homecoming queen? Do they even let you keep those in the sorority house?

Jilly:No. But I still have a couple that live at my dad’s house. I’ve always had a pet rat, since I was, like, eight. They’re smart and fun. Plus, Dicer’s mom HATED them.

Killer:Well, yeah, she’s a cunt. Do they get tangled in all that gorgeous hair of yours? Make a rat’s nest?

Jilly:No. Weirdo. You’re sponsored and stuff. Is that your fulltime job? You have like a million followers. You’re Instafamous, my dude.

Killer:It’s my fulltime job, yes. I’ve been on tour all over the US since the day you first texted me. I’ll only be able to ride for so long, though. I’m working with some friends on branding. I’m hoping to make my own line of gear at some point. What about you? What do you do besides host date parties and tailgate with mimosas?

Jilly:No major at the moment, undecided. I was working part-time at a little after-school program for kids, but after Dicer died, I just couldn’t find the joy. I didn’t want to bring the kids down, and I didn’t want to use them to bring myself up. I’m lucky, my dad is pretty successful, so I decided to take the semester and just…heal.

Killer:I get that. After we lost my father, the last thing I wanted to do was go out and put on a show. I took a few weeks off, but sponsors aren’t all that understanding.

Jilly:That pic of you when you were younger, that your dad?

Killer:Yeah. That was the first bike he bought me. He built me ramps, indulged all my dangerous ideas. He loved it. The guy with you on the high school graduation post? That’s Dicer, right?

Jilly:That’s him. He was so classically handsome. He stood on his chair and cheered for me as I walked across the stage.

Killer:He sounds like he was an amazing big brother.

Jilly:That he was. I have class in a few. Nice to officially meet you, Killian Ford, the famous BMX’er with the cool tattoos.

Killer:I’m going to continue to stalk your page. I see both Bentley and Cap tagged in some photos. It’s nice to meet you too, Jillian Hamilton, the beautiful homecoming queen.

Bentley + Killian

Bentley:So, like, Dicer wouldn’t want me hitting on his sister. But do you think he’d have issues with me hooking up with one of his ex-hook-ups?

Killian:Mmmm. Idk. How long ago did they stop, ya know, hooking up?

Bentley:Three years? They banged a bunch during our freshman year in college, but they never seemed that serious to me. He didn’t talk like they were.

Killian:I think it’s probably fine, man.

Bentley:Yeah, that’s what I figured. How you been? Jilly showed us your social. You’re a bit of a badass, huh?

Killian:Sometimes. Sometimes, not so much. I stalked you and Cap too. I could tell, just from the photos, how close the three of you were.

Bentley:My mom used to say we were joined at the hip and shared one brain. It’s been tough, trying to find our new dynamic. Cap and I have been friends for a long-ass time, but never without Dicer, you know? It was the three of us. I don’t know how to be the two of us.

Killian:Give it time. You’re both still healing, trying to get your footing back. When you lose someone suddenly like that, it’s jarring. It’s shock + grief.

Bentley:You read how he died?

Killian:After I knew his last name, I couldn’t help myself. I didn’t want to ask one of you, so I did an internet search. I didn’t read any specifics, but I’m really sorry, man. That’s brutal.

Bentley:He wasn’t reckless, he was just…alive. They were on their way to a party. He’d gotten that new car a couple days ago, so he didn’t know how it would handle those curves. He was going too fast. He walked away from the crash. The reports don’t mention that. But you know, Cap was in the car with him. They both walked away. Dicer swore he was okay, only a slight headache. They sat on the curb and waited for a tow instead of calling the police. One minute he was laughing, and the next he was gone.

Killian:Damn. That must’ve been really tough on Cap.

Bentley:He stopped eating. He stopped talking. For three days no one could reach him. Finally, Jilly walked into his house and slapped him across the face. Told him to man the fuck up because she couldn’t lose two brothers in the same week.

Killian:She sounds like quite the girl.

Bentley:She’s amazing. Dicer loved her so damn much. She was five when their parents got married. The two of them clicked, instantly. I think when I texted him, or well, when I texted you saying I wanted to ask her out, it wasn’t really about her. I just wanted to feel closer to him.

Killian:I can understand that. She loves you and Cap, a lot. The thing is, man, you two need to remember she’s her own person. She’s not just Dicer’s little sister. You can’t only love her as an extension of him.
