I couldn’t bear to see her like this. Every single night since we’d been home, she’d had the same recurring dream haunting her, whisking her right back to that night on the side of the road.

I knew a thing or two about PTSD, and I hated myself for letting it happen to her. The mother of my future child, my whole world, too afraid to even close her eyes.

As I laid there holding her tightly to me, she finally relaxed against me, and in exhaustion went limp, slipping back into sleep.

I stroked her hair. She still didn’t know how much she meant to me. I wanted to wait for the right moment to tell Addison I loved her, so that she knew I meant it. But after the attack, I felt like I couldn’t do it soon enough.

I was terrified of letting her in fully, but I was more terrified of losing her.

In the early hours of the morning, I finally slipped out of bed and pulled on a hoodie and sweats and went to my office downstairs. If I couldn’t sleep, I might as well get up.

I opened my laptop, the glow of the screen illuminating me in the darkness. An email from Mike popped up, and I quickly called him.

“Up so early?” Mike said groggily.

“Couldn’t sleep.”

“Well, that makes two of us.”

“So, what did you find?”

“You’re not going to like this.”

“Mike, get to it.”

Mike sighed. “They’ve got the assailants in custody, and they also have Charlie in custody.”

“Charlie?” I stood up and paced.

“They connected some unusual bank deposits, and Charlie got in over his head, it seems.”

“Go on.”

“It wasn’t just by chance that your demolitions kept getting delayed. Seems Davis Inc got some dirt on Charlie and they were blackmailing him to sabotage you. They wanted that big new fancy hotel contract for themselves and they were ready to do whatever it took to slow you down.”

I gritted my teeth, processing it. I knew Charlie had been acting off the last few months.

“So they were after me then, not Addison.” I confirmed.

“She just happened to be in your car that night, sounds like she was a loose end, and they didn’t want to deal with her.”

My stomach turned. A loose end. I almost lost Addison over someone’s greed.

“They’ve got everything they need to put these guys away for a very long time. I’m sorry to be the one to tell you about Charlie.” Mike consoled me.

“I appreciate you updating me.”

“Of course. Hang in there. You two will be back up to speed in no time.”

“Yeah.”

I hoped that would be the case.

There was a soft knock on the door, and Addison lingered in the doorway.

“Are you busy?” She asked.

“I’m always available for you.”
