I quickly climbed into the car and shut the door behind me. Mike stood outside the car for a while as I cried. Finally, he opened the door, and passed me a tissue from the front seat.

“Thanks.” I said, with a small laugh through my stuffy nose.

“You want to talk about it?”

I shook my head no. “I just need a couple minutes, so I don’t look like I’ve been crying and then I’ll be out of your hair.” I promised.

“Take all the time you need.”

Suddenly, Damian materialized outside the car.

Oh fuck.

I quickly wiped my face, and before I could open the door, he did. He stuck his face down into the car, immediately concerned.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I’m fine.” I scooted around him, feeling full of guilt, and got out of the car. Before I could take two steps towards the building, I gasped, feeling his warm hands wrap around my waist, pulling me back.

“Was it Jack?”

I looked back up at him, and the burning in his eyes. “No, it wasn’t Jack.”

“Then what?”

“It’s nothing, I’m fine Damian.” I snapped, as I twisted out of his grasp and made a beeline into the building. What was I supposed to do with his concern? One minute he was yelling at me in his office, making me cry, the next he was all concerned with finding me crying. He was so hypocritical. As I clutched my purse full of cash, I felt like I was just as hypocritical. Selling the bracelet was a vindictive move. I felt like I’d betrayed him in some weird way. I couldn't figure out why it was bothering me so much.

I quickly made my way back upstairs and shoved my purse under my desk. Damian came up moments later.

He looked at me for a moment, evaluating his next words. “We need to set up an event for the investors and the board. I’ve got too many moving pieces, and I need to get a little booze and free appetizers into everyone; keep everyone smiling until we’ve finalized the permits on everything.”

“Ok, I’ll get right on it.” I nodded, trying to steady my voice.

“Good.” He went into his office and called out behind him.

“Oh, and by the way, did you see the memo I sent you about your additional responsibilities?”

What now? Couldn’t I just have a moment of peace around here? I didn’t have the energy for whatever hoops he had for me to jump through today.

I gritted my teeth but responded sweetly. “No, I'll take a look at it now.”

I could feel his eyes on me as I opened up my email. This ought to be good. I grumbled as I scrolled through my inbox, finally finding it.

I flicked my eyes up to his, and he had a smug look on his face. I quickly reread the email to make sure I hadn’t misread it.

I’m puttingyou in charge of the florals for the event this weekend, and you’ll also be responsible from here on out for doing florals for the entire West Industries building.

-Damian

I triedto suppress the small smile that was dying to creep onto my face. It was an olive branch. A big fucking olive branch. Today of all days. I got up and leaned on the doorframe of his office, keeping my arm behind my back so he wouldn’t see the bracelet missing.

“I’m responsible for the company florals now?” I asked softly.

“Yes. Is that something you can accommodate?”

I nodded, chewing on my cheek, feeling immensely guilty.

“The corner conference room will serve as your workstation for now. It’s been stocked with the necessary supplies.”
