“I may have torn my perch from the roof of the theater in an argument with Sethos. So if you don’t mind very much, I was hoping to leave it on your balcony, just for a while.”

He grins. “Say no more! And don’t be in a rush to leave.”

Jessie flings herself into my side. “You’re staying?”

I nod. “I guess I’m staying. Sort of. I’ll still have to return to my perch at first light.”

She squeezes tighter. “I don’t care. That’s the best news ever.”

I shake my head but put my arm around her and hold her tight. “I’m glad you think so, princess. But I will work on finding us a place eventually. And a job. I need a job.”

“We could always use more security at Monstrous Deals,” Maurice says.

I nod, silently wondering how all the problems that seemed so big at the start of the night, have somehow become so small. If only there was a way to break the curse, my world would be just about perfect right now.

TWENTY SEVEN

Jessie

“Great job, everyone. That’s a wrap for today. Don’t forget the rehearsal schedule ramps up next week ahead of opening night on Saturday.” The director stands from his seat in the audience and applauds us as we break out of character and turn and walk offstage, smiling and congratulating each other.

On the way to my dressing room, Ashley squeezes my arm. “Oh my god. Have I told you enough times how amazing your voice is?”

I laugh. She tells me this every time we rehearse. I have to say I’m still not tired of hearing it. This part feels like it was freaking made for me. I’m half-convinced it was. I’ve never seen the show anywhere else and Sethos wouldn’t tell us where he got the script.

Glancing at my phone after I’m changed, I frown. Still at least three hours until sunset. It’s funny. I used to love summer, but the longer hours of daylight mean fewer hours with William. I can’t say I’m loving that.

Might as well stop in and see if Sethos is hanging around. I’ve been meaning to talk to him.

I’m pleased when I spot the sphinx in the VIP box with his phone to his ear. He turns, spotting me, and raises a finger to signal me to wait. I could roll my eyes, but it won’t make him any less arrogant, so I just wait. I can let him boss me around a bit until I ask him the favor I want to ask him.

A few minutes later, he opens the glass door and ushers me in. “Miss Jessie. What can I do for my shining star?”

I snort. “I’m glad you asked, actually. There is something you can do for me.”

He sighs dramatically, but a smile plays at the corner of his mouth. I’m clearly in the good books this week. “Do go on.”
