“Hmm,” she hummed. “This is going to be a problem. I don’t know how to shield.”

“You’re doing it right now.”

She sat straight up. “I am?”

“Yes.” I laughed and tried to break through her shield. It held strong. “I can’t read you at all. Not like before.”

She quietly considered that. “I don't feel you either.” Our eyes held. “I don’t like it. I was kind of liking being in your head.”

I smiled. “Well, then unshield.”

She screwed her face up in concentration, grunted a few times, and huffed out a breath. “I can’t.”

I laughed. “We’ll work on that. Something tells me the ‘I’m trying to take a poop’ face isn’t the right way to go about it.” That earned me another tiny backhand. She loved it.

“And how’d you figure things out?”

“Eventually, we went to your father and confided in him. Well, I did. The other guys wasted their time on other things. Our bond is the only one of its kind, he discovered. Apparently, throughout history, there have been several mentions of two males and even a couple instances of a triple bond over the years. They described similar phenomena to what we experienced initially—before we added our fourth member. Never has there been a quad, one member of each element. And never had anyone experienced a connection as intense as ours or to our extent.”

“What does that mean?”

“We still don’t know. That’s really all we do know. We don’t know how it happened. Or why. Why us? We read books. Well, Aiden read books, because Aiden’s good at books. We searched records and archives—well…” I grinned. Kaia loved my grins. “Griffin did that. He didn’t mind the weird, dark, quiet records archives. I can’t do them. They have more dust than air. A closed room with very little ventilation would drain my power too quickly. And it’s too quiet. I don’t like places where I can hear myself breathing. It makes me too self-conscious.” I chuckled at her raised eyebrows. “We even went as far as searching military records—despite Ash’s claiming he’s memorized all notable facts in the history of Adaria—and he found nothing there either.”

“And what exactly did you do?”

“I told you. I went to Eryk.” I smirked. “I also distracted Fred while he worked. The records guard. The guy loved me. Most people do. I’m good with people.”

That earned me another smack in the belly, so I grabbed her hand and pulled her into my lap. I warned her what would happen if she kept hitting me.

“And now we have a bond,” I said, my mouth poised above hers.

“And I’m going to be Claimed by your best friend,” she whispered.

“The fuck you will be,” I said, claiming her mouth. Claiming the other part of my soul.

Kaia’s shield crashed down as she responded to the kiss, her thoughts pouring into me. I groaned low and deep in my chest as her lust filled my senses, building my own. I inhaled her through that kiss, nibbling on her lips so I could taste every inch of her. Goddess, it was exhilarating. The taste and feel of Kaia in my arms was unlike anything I’d ever felt.

She turned, no longer draped across my lap, to swing her leg over my hip and sit back down with her chest pressed to mine. She kissed me back with such passion that it made my head spin, lost in the feel of her. She began to rock her hips back and forth over my growing erection, and I groaned. She swallowed that and buried her hands into my hair, pulling me closer, our mouths frantic.

We couldn’t get close enough, each striving to eliminate all space between us. Kaia's hips shifted to press harder into me while I ground up into her. Her round breasts were battling my hard chest as we drew in heavy, gasping breaths, unable to get enough air in our frenzy to consume each other. And my hands were everywhere. Running down her spine. Along the curve of her ass. In her hair. Holding her against me. I needed to touch her. My need was only enhanced by her need to touch and be touched.

I reached up, angling her face to the side so I could bury my face in her neck. The smell of her was strongest there. The scent of freedom and passion, and what the fuck am I even talking about? Who the fuck can even think when she’s grinding down on me and making the most delicious noises of pleasure I had ever heard.

My lips found her neck, and I sucked, pulling the soft skin into my mouth hard, knowing I would leave a mark. I needed my mark on her.

I went back to claim her soft, wet lips again while I ground against her from below. Unable to help myself, I pulled her lip between my teeth, loving the moan that escaped in reply and inhaled the breathy sigh she released when I licked away the sting. I parted her lips with my tongue, rolling it along hers. A shiver raced down my spine when she moaned low in her chest in response. This woman!

Kaia jerked, breaking the kiss. A scream fell from her lips as she threw her head back, crying. And pain, so much pain, replaced her lust. Fire was shooting up my back, right over my left kidney, and a wet warmth coated my hands as Kaia collapsed against my chest.

I opened my eyes, breaking out of the fog of lust. The door to the room was wide open. A man stood over Kaia, light glinting off the blade already coated in Kaia’s blood. It was raised to strike her again.

I shot out Air, propelling the assailant towards the open doorway. I quickly turned and lay Kaia on the bed, careful of her injury. Wrenching the excess sheets into a ball, I bunched them against her side and applied pressure. I maintained that pressure as I turned to meet the assailant.

Fear for Kaia was pushing me faster. I could feel her pain and knew it meant she was alive. We still had time.

Fury blinded me to anything but wanting to end the man who had dared to hurt my mate.
