“Remove yourself from my view, Conor, or so help me I will cut your dick off.”

Conor’s smile eased and he looked concerned. He knew I would too. I’d been cooped up in this damn house, with someone at my beck and call the entire time. I hated it. I was not used to this treatment and I didn’t like not being able to do simple things like go out into town and do what I wanted to do.

“Let her go, Conor.”

I turned to see Lorcan leaning against a doorway, and I could see he’d aged since I last saw him. I always liked Lorcan, he was smart and intelligent and always covering for his brother’s.

Conor begrudgingly moved away from the door and let me walk through it. I realized now that I’d let Conor drive me.

I was stuck here and it was a long ass walk down the driveway until I got into the town center.

Fuck.

“I’ll drive you.”

I turned to see Lorcan heading toward the garage. Within moments, he pulled up beside me in his car. I got in and let him take me down to the city.

“Cottage or here?” he asked.

“Town,” I told him, wondering how he knew about the cottage or the fact that I had been staying there. “I need to get some supplies.”

“I can wait.”

“It’s okay,” I told him. “I’ll find my way back down to the cottage.”

Lorcan was hesitant and for a moment, I didn’t think he would unlock the car but he did after a brief pause. I got out and closed the door. He waited until I got into the grocery store before he took off.

I felt like I could take a breath of air for the first time for days. Being close to Killian for days but not actually allowing him to be around me had been hard. My pussy had been screaming for me to forgive him and let him in, and yet my heart knew better. My head was finally listening to my heart and telling me to keep my distance.

“Sloane Carpenter,” I heard my name being called out. Pushing Killian out of my mind, I turned to see a familiar face. One I hadn’t seen in years.

“Oh, Amity,” I gasped. “It’s been forever and a day.”

She came over to me and we hugged. It felt a little stiff on her end, but she’d never been great with affection, even when we had been best friends in high school.

“Tell me about it,” she chuckled. “I wanted to reach out after Sean died but I didn’t quite know what to say.”

“Oh, that’s okay, it’s been years now.”

“I know,” she said. “But, well, you know.”

“What’s been happening with you?” I asked her, wanting the awkwardness to go away.

“Oh, that’s a long and sordid story. I wouldn’t want to bore you.”

“Am, don’t be ridiculous. We’ve known each other since we were kids. Let me just grab a couple of things and we can head down to the cottage.”

“The cottage?” Amity exclaimed. “Wow, you still have that place?”

I remembered back to the days when Amity and I would get her older brother to take us down there while my parents were too blitzed to know where I was, and we’d drink all of my mother’s vacation liquor. We almost ended up in hospital the first time and my liver never fully forgave me for it.

“Sure do, actually, I’m looking to sell it if you know anyone.”

She shook her head, and I could tell she was a little distracted, looking around. She must have a lot to talk to me about if she was nervous. I quickly grabbed enough things for a few days and headed to the cashier.

“I don’t have my car,” I told her, realizing now that I probably should have worked that out before now.

“That’s okay, I have mine. This way.”
