“Yeah,” I said. “Rather, he found me. In London.”

“He has contacts there, I’ve told you about them,” he defended himself.

“He’s running something big down there. How connected is he?” I asked him. Jeremiah looked at my cut lip and my black eye and it dawned on him. His brother had gotten the best of me. I hated to admit it, but it hurt my pride a little. No one got the best of me. Everyone knew that. It was the reason I hadn’t shown myself in the club too. I didn’t want people to think they could best me and get away with it. But that was precisely what Ronan had done.

“He has a few contacts but I was never involved with that side. He wanted me to run things from dad’s shop, keep an ear to the ground so to speak.”

“Who do you know he trusts?” Conor asked.

“I guess you could speak with Darren Lewis.”

“Darren?”

“Yeah, he’s some rich suit he connected with when he first dreamed of taking over the town. He lives in Dublin now with his wife, but he still runs a lot of things from there.”

Darren…why did that name sound familiar to me? I couldn’t put my finger on it but it didn’t feel good. Something was up with this Darren guy and I needed to find out.

I got up and pulled my phone from my pocket, moving away from them to call Teeghan.

“Hey,” she answered. “Are you guys almost done? I’m thinking of getting lunch delivered.”

“Don’t let Walter hear you say that,” I told her. “That’s not why I’m calling anyway.”

“What’s up?”

“Does the name Darren Lewis mean anything to you?”

She was hesitant for a moment, and I felt my gut drop. This wasn’t going to be something I wanted to hear, and I knew instantly it was about Sloane.

“Well, yeah, but why?”

“Who is he?” I demanded.

“He’s married to Sinead Carpenter,” she said. My stomach plummeted and I felt bile rise in my throat.

“You mean Sloane’s cousin Sinead?”

“Yep, the one she’s working with down in Dublin. Why do you ask?”

I hung up the phone and walked back over to the table. “We gotta go.”

Lorcan and Conor didn’t question me, they simply followed me out to the car. I got in behind the wheel and took off, leaving a cloud of smoke in our wake.

“What is it?” Lorcan asked, holding onto his door as I raced through the streets to get back home.

“Sloane’s in trouble again.”

“Jesus,” Conor swore. “How the hell can one little woman get into so much strife?”

“Tell me.”

I turned to Lorcan briefly before I refocused on the road. “Darren is her cousin’s husband. She just moved closer to him.”

“Gun it to Dublin,” Conor said. “We need to find out more about this fucker though. Call in the recruits, Lor.”

Lorcan was already hitting the button on his phone to call his men to look into Darren Lewis and Sinead Carpenter. My heart was in my throat, making it hard to breathe. I thought letting her go was the best choice but it turns out, it was probably the worst. I’d let her into the enemy's hands, again, and all because I thought being around her was too hard.

Man the fuck up, Kill.
