“Be serious.”

“I need you to come back with me.”

I felt the laugh bubble to the surface before I could stop it. “Killian, you told me to leave and now you’re telling me to come back?”

“I thought it would be safer here but it turns out, it’s not.”

“What are you on about?”

Killian put his coffee mug down and leant forward. “I found out someone you know is working for Ronan O’Brien. You’re in danger.”

“How am I the one in danger?”

“Because the man who Ronan trusts is Darren Lewis.”

The sound of Sinead’s husband's name had chills going down my spine.

“You think my own family are going to hurt me?”

“How well do you really know Sinead?” he asked me. I hated that the answer wasn’t well, but I didn’t want him to put doubt in my mind. Killian had been gone from my life for years, almost a decade, I didn’t need this right now.

“Get out,” I said.

“Slo.”

“No, Killian, you can’t just come in here, and tell me to come home after you told me to leave. Now, I have to leave because you’re putting me in danger, yet again.”

He closed his eyes, annoyed. Good.

“Sloane…I can’t protect you if you don’t listen to me.”

“I’ll be fine,” I told him. “Darren would never hurt me and he’d never be involved with someone like Ronan. He’s a good guy. I don’t even think he’s held a gun.”

The sound of a knock on my door had Killian standing up and looking for what I could only imagine was a weapon. It was in the other room with the rest of his clothes but I wasn’t going to make it easier for him to scare the hell out of whoever it was at my door.

“Relax.”

I moved to the door, my heart raced as I looked up at Darren. “Are you all right?”

I nodded, even though I knew something was about to happen, but I couldn’t put my finger on why I felt that way. Even though I had been ignoring Killian’s pleas, I knew he wouldn’t have come here unless some sort of fear was there. “Sure am.”

He turned to come in and that’s when he saw Killian.

“Hey,” he aimed at him. “You’re not welcome here.”

“Darren, I presume.”

I was about to move in between them before I felt Darren’s hand on my arm. He held me in place beside him.

“Let her go,” Killian growled.

“I don’t think so,” Darren replied, equally gravelly. I looked up at Darren, only to see his kind eyes change instantly. I felt incredibly vulnerable and like an idiot. I was entirely too far away from Killian for him to help me. How the hell had I gotten myself in trouble again?

He had been right.

No matter how far I got away from him, I was in danger.

What the ever loving fuck?
