“Where are our guys?” I asked him, under my breath, without taking my eyes off Ronan.

“Kian called,” Lorcan said. “They’re held up. We only have a couple of guys around the place, hidden. Keep your attention on Ronan. I’ll keep my eyes on everyone else.”

“Where is my brother, O’Farrell?” Ronan called out. That’s when I saw Jeremiah coming out from the shadows, his hands beside him and his shoulders relaxed. He knew what was coming before I could stop it.

I turned to Ronan who had his gun aimed and ready. The shot ripped out of the gun before I could react. Jeremiah fell to his knees, the bullet wound in the middle of his forehead. He was dead before his knees hit the ground.

CHAPTERELEVEN

SLOANE

The shot came out of nowhere. First they were yelling, and then there was silence and then boom. My heart was in my throat. If it weren’t for the gag, it may have leapt out of my mouth and run away.

I waited to be bundled back into the van but instead, there was an eerie silence for a few moments before gunfire erupted everywhere. I stood up and looked everywhere for somewhere to hide but I was in real danger of being shot no matter where I went. I got up the courage to try and make a run for it, shot or no shot, but that’s when I saw her.

Sinead snuck up from beside the van and shoved me backward into the van again. I couldn’t pull myself up before the doors closed.

Fuck.

I was so close.

The gunfire continued, followed by shouting and cars revving. Everything was happening so quickly, I tried desperately to get my wrists out of the ropes but they were so tight, I could feel my skin beginning to rip slightly.

I grunted in frustration as I felt the van rev to life. If I could get to the doors, I could probably force them open. In the rush, I know Sinead didn’t lock them.

Pushing up to my knees, I was about to lean forward when the doors opened and I saw Teeghan. Relief flooded through me as she jumped inside and ran to me.

I was trying to show her we needed to jump out but she stopped me.

“We have to let them take us,” she said quickly. “You need to trust me. Just let them take us, and I have a plan. If we jump out now, we’ll surely be shot.”

Sadness overwhelmed me as she slammed the doors shut again and the van drove off, forcing us to fall over ourselves. Teeghan ran to the side of the van and hid from the window where Sinead was screaming at Darren to go. She told me to stay where I was so they could see me.

I had no option but to listen.

“Run him over,” Sinead screamed at Darren as the van sped through the parking area of the docks. That’s when I saw Killian in the windscreen, aiming the gun at the window. I ducked, hoping he did shoot them but instead, I heard wheels screeching and then the gunfire was getting further and further away.

Tears freely flowed down my cheeks into the rag still tied around my mouth. I looked over at Teeghan who held her finger up to her mouth to keep me silent. Not that I could make sound even if I wanted to.

“What the fuck happened?” I heard Sinead scream.

“Ronan was always going to kill Jer. We need to figure out what his next plan is, Sinead.”

“He did it so he couldn’t tell them anything about our plan.”

Sinead scoffed. “He told them already, I know he did. He was always a weak man. Thank fuck Ronan stopped telling him things early on.”

“Whatever,” Darren said, slamming his fist on the wheel. “Ronan keeps us out of the loop too, Sinead. Obviously, one day and probably soon, we’ll be on the other end of his gun barrel too.”

“Please,” Sinead scoffed again. “He trusts us, well he trusts me.”

Silence descended on the cab and I could see the cracks forming. Sinead thought she was in Ronan’s inner circle, but he was a two faced snake and would turn on anyone he thought he had to in order to win. And he wanted to win over everything.

KILLIAN

I shot the last of Ronan’s guys in the head and tossed his body over the edge of the dock, into the water. Turning around, I looked over at the body of Jeremiah and saw Lorcan issuing a prayer for him. I hadn’t seen him do anything religious since we found out about the dastardly priest a few months ago.

“We should get back to the estate,” I told him. “You were right, they were never going to give her back. Do you think she was even in that van?”
