“It’s okay,” she says quickly. “It’s just Cam.”

I blink, my eyes adjusting to the darkness, and Cam comes into focus. He’s sitting a few feet away with his back propped against the wall, arms slung over his knees. He nods, though his forehead is deeply creased, his jaw hard.

“The others?” I ask, looking around the rest of the cell.

“Others?” asks Adrienne.

I push to my feet, and the chain around my ankle pulls taut, preventing me from taking more than a few steps. I flip the blade of my ring, but Adrienne lays her hand over mine before I can make the cut.

“Your magic won’t work in here. There’s red salt in the shackles.”

Of fucking course.

“They didn’t bring anyone else in with me?” I try to see through the bars if there are other cells.

“Just you,” says Adrienne.

“Where are we?”

“What’s left of the Locklear dungeon,” comes Cam’s gravelly voice behind me. “Must have run out of room in their own,” he adds in a mutter barely loud enough for me to hear.

“What do you mean? What happened?”

Cam and Adrienne exchange a look.

“It worked—your alchemist plan,” Adrienne says slowly. “Westcott’s followers started to turn on him. He caught on quickly, forcing people to remove them, but the damage had already been done. He started imprisoning traitors within the compounds. He’s kind of…”

“Out of his goddamn mind?” Cam offers. “He’s got hordes of his wendigos patrolling the perimeter now—that’s how they found us.”

“Have you heard from Calla?” I ask, terrified of being hopeful, but there it is in my chest just the same. If I managed to break free of V’s hold, there’s no reason she couldn’t do it too.

Adrienne’s expression darkens. “She’s the one who put us down here.”

“But when was that?” I push.

Adrienne shrugs, looking to Cam for help.

“A few days ago?” he says.

Before the real Calla and I crossed back then. So there’s still hope.

“Has Westcott come to see you?” I ask.

Adrienne shakes her head.

So much for thatfamily is everythingbullshit he was feeding me.

“Who brought me down here?”

Cam shrugs. “Didn’t see his face.”

None of this makes any sense. Keeping me and Adrienne down here, I guess I can understand that. Especially after Calla told me he’d done the same to Mom. He thinks we’re a threat but doesn’t want to kill us…yet. But then why is Cam here?

I meet Cam’s eyes. “Did the spell work?”

He rolls up his sleeve, exposing his bare forearm. “Seems like it.”

I dig my brows in. “Do you think Westcott knows that?”
