Drago nods in agreement.

I reach over, running the tips of my fingers over Gabriel’s soft cheeks.

“We have him now. And no one is ever going to take him from us again,” I declare, meaning every word of my conviction.

“Thank you, Bri.”

My eyes snap to his. “For what?” I ask.

“For loving my son. For loving me. For being there when I needed you to take him. I could go on and on.” He leans over, taking my lips and giving me a soft, quick kiss. “I really don’t know what I’d do if you’d never staked out my warehouse. Very badly mind you,” he jokes. But sobers quickly, adding, “And I never want to.”

His words from the shower haunt me.I’d have to kill him.

I don’t want things to get taken that far. I’m a cop, he’s a cop. No matter the reason he became one, we all, or most of us hold the same belief, you bring the bad guy to justice. We don’t take justice into our own hands if we can help it.

Who would want something like that on their conscience?

“Drago?” I snap my eyes up to his. “We’re in this together, right?”

“To the very end, baby.”

He doesn’t give me a chance to prod anymore. His head descends, his lips coming down on mine as his heavy body fuses with mine.

CHAPTER SIXTY

BRIANNA

“What’s this?” I ask the following morning when I’m getting dressed and D places a card in my hand.

“A fake identification card. What does it look like?” he deadpans.

“I know what it is, smartass. Why are you giving it to me and why is my picture on it?” I wave it at him.

What the hell has he done?Whyis what I really want to ask, but I don’t—not yet anyway.

“You need to see a doctor to make sure everything is okay with the baby.” He breathes in deeply like he’s preparing himself for something big. “Don’t get pissed, but I took the liberty of scheduling you an appointment at a clinic outside the city.”

Not today I hope. He knows damn good and well it’s Chasity Carlisle’s hearing.

I anticipate the prosecution to call on me for my testimony—the ADA prepped me for it early last week. The assistant district attorney is a fireball, and I was so happy when I learned she’d be prosecuting Gabe’s biological mother for her part in his kidnapping. Perhaps she didn’t help Diaz take him from my home, but she was there the day Gabriel was rescued. It was clear she wasn’t planning on saving her son, and she sure as shit didn’t try to help me when Diaz had me handcuffed to a chair.

It’s not that Drago can’t go to the hearing, it’s more like he shouldn’t. That would show his father he does care about Gabriel, and that’s the last thing either of us wants. I’ll be so happy when all of this is over and behind us. That day can’t come soon enough.

“I’m not mad,” I say, pocketing the ID card into the inside pocket of my black suit jacket.

I decided on a pantsuit with a deep red blouse this morning because red, for whatever reason, always makes me feel mentally stronger. And today, I need all the strength I can muster.

“You’re right. I do need to see an Ob/Gyn and until this moment, hadn’t thought about it. Thank you.” I smile tightly, trying to give him this, even if it does feel a little bit overbearing and paranoid.

“That’s not what those blue eyes are telling me.” He points his finger at my face.

Sighing, I take a step forward and lift my arms, wrapping them around his neck.

“When I tell you to chill then do so, but until then, you’re fine, we’re fine. Okay?”

“If you say so.” He bends down, taking my lips between his and kissing me.

We’re interrupted when the doorbell rings. Pulling back and scrunching my nose, I wonder who that could possibly be. Mona and Luca never knock or wait to be let in. Caprice stayed the night, and since she’s been here, it feels like this is exactly where she belongs. Even Drago said his house is her house, so it wouldn’t be her. But who else could it be so early in the morning?
