How did this even happen? That’s the question that continues to plague my thoughts. Why did this happen, and who the fuck allowed that man within touching distance of Gabe, let alone take custody of him?

“So,” I smart off at no one in particular, “It’s like a legal loophole for kidnapping.”

“He wasn’t kidnapped, Bri,” Justin weighs in, earning him an ‘I’d shoot you right now if I could get away with it’ look. “It’s not. I know you see it like that, but you’re also a cop, and you need to look at this objectively right now.”

“Objectively?” I laugh. “How do you expect me to do that? What if it was Tori that was taken from you? Would you look at it objectively if it were your daughter, Summers?”

Justin arrived ten minutes ago. I guess Drago called him and E. I haven’t seen Eric, but the way Summers is dressed makes me think he just came from a date, not his office downtown. He’s in jeans and boots with a dress shirt. His blond hair is styled on top of his head, and he smells more manly than usual. He looks good, and although I know he’s separated, and possibly going through a divorce, I’m hopeful for him. He deserves a good woman in his life. We all need someone to share the good, the bad, and the ugly with.

His brows furrow as he looks away from me. Shame crosses his face for a second before he covers it and is back to the in-charge type of man he is. “Neither one of you can afford to lose your shit right now.”

“How can I not?” Drago bites out from behind his desk. He’s been here ever since the cops and social workers left, taking our boy with them. His neck is corded tight and the tension in his office is thick. “On top of it, Caprice won’t answer her fucking phone. Have you seen her?” D directs his question at Justin.

“She’s with Tori. She’s fine.”

I thought D said she was going to dinner with friends.

“Why is my sister with your daughter?” Luca asks, and I turn around from my seat to see him standing in the doorway, his arms stretched above his head. Dropping them, he crosses his arms over his chest, stepping inside D’s home office.

“Will you just go make sure?” Drago sighs, scrubbing his hand down his face. “Will you do that for me, so I have one less person to worry about?”

Justin stands, nodding. “Yeah. And I’ll see what I can find out. I have a buddy that’s close to the judge who signed the order.”

“Thanks,” we both say in unison.

Summers bypasses Luca on the way out, showing himself out of Drago’s house.

“What’s going on? Bri looks like she’s on the verge of tears and ready to go on a shooting spree. I could say the same for you, brother.” His brows pull in as his eyes dart between Drago and me.

“Dad took my son.”

“What?” His arms drop. “Why? How?”

“It doesn’t fucking matter,” D says. “But we have to figure out what his end game is and fast. I don’t trust him, and there is no way Gabe can stay a minute longer with that bastard.” Drago stands, and his iMac goes flying off his desk, crashing into the wall. “I will kill that motherfucker if he hurts him.” The promise isn’t just in D’s words. The promise is in the ice-cold stare as he looks directly at me.

“We’ll get him back,” I lie, not sure of anything at the moment. “We have to. Maybe the judge didn’t realize who he was signing him over to.” That has to be it. No one in their right mind would have done that knowing the things Vincent Acerbi has allegedly done.

“There isn’t a sane person in this city that doesn’t know who my father is. Fuck!” Drago yells, turning away from us to peer out the window.

Grabbing his cell phone from his pocket, he quickly brings the screen to life and then pulls it to his ear. After a few seconds, he turns to face us again and drops the phone to his desk, shaking his head. “Why isn’t my sister answering?”

“Where’s CC?” Luca is instantly alarmed. “Why did you ask Summers to check on her?”

“Sit.” Drago motions for the chair beside me.

“Whatever it is, D, just tell me.” Luca’s forehead creases.

“I asked Summers to keep an eye on her. He has her watching Tori so that he has an excuse to interact with her.”

“Why?” Luca has a puzzled look on his face. “And since when?”

“I asked him the week before last. And the why?” Drago takes a deep breath, pulling air in through his mouth. “I don’t trust Dad. I’m worried he’s going to do something.”

“To his daughter?” Luca looks at his brother like he’s lost his mind.

“She’s not.”

There’s a moment of silence between all of us as Luca absorbs D’s words.
