My eyes dart across the clearing ahead, combing over it carefully, but there’s still nothing.

“Where are they?” I whisper to Elio without looking in his direction.

“The sky!” Someone shouts, sending a burst of adrenaline screaming through my veins, and I snap my head back to stare up at the emerald sky.

Falling toward us through the clouds, spiraling in a chaotic tornado of limbs and wings, are at least a hundred Malevs with wings. It’s not the demon swarm we expected, but there are still enough to cause a problem. The rest probably aren’t far off, and these flying creatures were sent ahead to test our defenses.

I can’t wait to slaughter them all.

“Fuck,” Elio grits out, extending his wings and readying himself to meet them head on.

My claws extend automatically, turning into six-inch blades in the blink of an eye, and I look to Rafe for direction. He raises a hand toward the sky before roaring over the clearing, easily drowning out everything else, and his form turns to shadows around the edges.

Smoky, swirling, lethal.

Then, he rises into the air, and the rest of the winged monsters soar with him, racing to meet the Malevs halfway. Elio pushes off the ground behind me, shooting into the air in a flash, and I watch him fly with outstretched claws toward the dark, gnarly creatures descending on us.

So it begins.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

DEVYN

“Ignatius, it’s been two days,” I huff, shaking out my hands to get the feeling back in them.

We’ve gone through at least a dozen spells today, from levitating to electrifying, and I’m exhausted. I’ve been pushing the boundaries of my magic relentlessly, practicing, fighting to get better as quickly as I can, but I’m more than ready to leave.

I’m restless. Impatient.

I need to get back to the monster realm to check on my mates.

And this mother fucker is prolonging my suffering.

“You’ve made exceptional progress.” Ignatius grins with a nod. “But why don’t we just do one more exercise? Just in case?”

“That’s what you said this morning.” I groan and throw my head back against the back of the couch. Despite our extensive efforts to clean and repair everything in the living room, the faint smell of char still clings to the furniture. “I’ve practiced enough. I’ll be fine. We need to go.”

“Youdidsay that this morning, Nate,” Darius calls from the kitchen. His vibrant blue hair is neatly combed and he’s dressed casually for his bartending job.

He’s throwing together a late lunch for the three of us before he heads to work for the night. Apparently, he doesn’t live with Ignatius, but he might as well considering how much time he spends here.

Ignatius sighs, and I look up in time to see him massage his temples. “I know.”

“Then let’s go,” I say, pushing to my feet and plopping my hands on my hips. “What are we waiting for?”

His unnatural green eyes meet mine across the space, and I note the hesitance in his expression. He doesn’t think I’m ready, and he’s probably right. My magic is a little unpredictable at best. Catastrophic at worst, but honestly, that could come in handy.

“Your mates won’t be very pleased with me,” he says softly, running his fingers through his dark hair. “I’ll be directly opposing their wishes by taking you back. It’s not wise to oppose Rafe, Devyn. You know this…”

“Yes, but I was attacked. You saved me,” I remind him. “Tell them we were being chased and the portal was our way of escaping. Hell, open the portal and I’ll go alone.”

“That’s not happening,” Ignatius snaps. “I’m not letting you go alone. Then they really would kill me.”

I glare at him, my temper rising. There are about a million things I want to say to him, but I know being a bitch won’t get me my way.Or maybe it will.

Ignatius might decide to stop helping me. He might refuse to make a portal.

Granted, my magic has been unlocked now, so I could try to make a portal myself, but I have no idea what I’m doing. I can barely get things to levitate, and it seems like the only thing I’m really good at so far is fire.
