She’s nothing, she’s less than nothing. She’s a mosquito, a tiny buzzing nuisance. Her death will be a blessing to this world. So why, when I close my eyes, do I see her smiling? Why, when I lay down to sleep, do I only think of my hands all over her, inside her? I bash my head on the stones, trying to knock myself out so I don’t have to hear her crying anymore, but I’m not capable of damaging myself so much.

“Mara…” she sobs, and I hear her crawling toward the bars. My eyes fly open and I stare at the ceiling, my body screaming at me to stop her, to keep her away from whatever those things are, but I force myself not to move.

“Mara, please? Please!”

“Can't you see she’s dead?” I snarl.

Fayla sobs louder. “She’s not dead, no, she can’t be dead…she’s all I have… Mara!”

“As a vampire, I know you can smell the rot if I can. Don’t you see the skin the others left on the bars? Stop deceiving yourself. She’s here to eat you, like the others try to. I’ll get to watch you die, and then I’ll get to watch your friend eat you. The end.”

“How can you be so cruel?”

“How can you show emotions?” I snap back at, rolling up on my elbows to see her inches away from Mara’s reaching hands.

“Just because I’m a vampire doesn’t mean I don’t feel…” Fayla’s voice is small, defeated, and she reaches for her friend.

“Are you feeling pretty stupid right now?” I growl, storming over to the hole and glaring at her. “I want to watch you die slowly, vampire, get away from that thing.”

“I don’t believe you!” she whispers, her eyes slowly turning back to me. “I don’t believe you that Mara’s dead. I definitely don’t believe you want me dead…”

“Believe it or not, princess, that’s how I feel. I’d love to watch your whole family die, one by one. Starting with Dominique.” I hiss her name as if it’s a curse word. Remembering the woman who was my friend before she turned traitor and let Corbett murder my uncle.

“Who?” Fayla asks, her brows fluttering down.

I’m surprised to see genuine confusion in her eyes. “Your sister in law, who the fuck else?” I hiss.

Her eyebrows knit further together. “I have a sister in law?”

“You have five!” I scream in frustration.

Her mouth parts in shock. “But…that means…”

“That you have five bloodthirsty, murderous brothers who wreak havoc on the human population for longer than anyone can perceive? Yeah, you do.”

“Wow…” She smirks, actually smirking through her tears. “I guess that means you’re in big trouble?”

“Excuse me?” I glare at her, unsure of what she’s getting at.

“Well, you just had your hands inside me. You were talking about making love to me, and now you want to watch me die. If I have five brothers and sisters like you say, it won’t be just Mother and Father coming to rescue me, now will it?”

Cold fear runs up and down my spine, but Fayla is walking closer with every word.

“My father would have killed everyone in his path. I would have begged for your life… But with five older brothers? Older than anyone can perceive? And only one of you?” She laughs, brazenly kneeling in front of the hole and smiling at me. “Maybe you won't get to watch me die, after all. Five brothers, five of their wives, Mother and Father, and only one of you?”

“They’ll never find you…” I whisper, my voice hard.

“Maybe… Or maybe you could get over yourself and realize what we have is real and I can protect you!”

I draw back with a sharp hiss. She’s painting some naive picture in her mind. One that belongs in fairytales.

But she’s a monster.

And they don’t get some happily ever after.

“You don’t know anything, princess,” I snarl. “We’re enemies, and always will be.”

She recoils as if I’ve slapped her.
