“Nah. It’s beautiful. You’ll feel right at home in no time. Can I see Sawyer’s nursery?”

Now,thatshe was proud of. The baby animals theme was adorable, if she did say so herself. She’d used greens and yellows because she’d refused to tell anyone the sex of the baby before he was born. She’d wanted people to focus on that mystery rather than who the father of her child was.

“Wow,” he said when he walked in. His smile seemed sad when he looked at her. Sawyer was asleep in the sling attached to her front, and he reached to gently stroke his son’s hair. “He’s going to be happy here.”

“I hope so. My place doesn’t compare to yours.”

“It’s not a contest, Olivia. He’ll be loved and cared for no matter where he is. And you’ll be getting two million dollars soon, so if you want to move, you can.”

“I almost forgot about that. I’m still not sure how I feel about accepting it.”

“It’s not negotiable. And, we haven’t talked about spousal maintenance and child support, yet.”

“I make a nice living, Mav. I don’t need spousal support, other than maybe a little moral support every now and then.” That made him genuinely smile, and she continued, “And since he’ll be with you probably more than he’ll be with me, I don’t think child support is in order.”

“Spousal support and child support were part of the contract, Olivia.”

And that’s another thing. He never called hersweetheartordarlin’anymore. Everything was her name.

“Well, since we’re altering the custody terms, I think we can alter that, too.”

“I just want you to have choices. If you decide you’re not ready to go back full-time, I want you to feel like you can without worrying financially.”

She felt her shoulders droop. “That’s really kind of you. Thank you. Maybe we can talk about that if the need arises.”

“I’d rather just have it in the divorce decree so you know you’re guaranteed the money. You don’thaveto spend it. You can put it in an account for Sawyer, or, hell, give it to charity, but I want you to feel secure.”

Why did he have to be such a good guy? Why couldn’t he be the asshole who’d shown up at her hospital room?

Olivia sighed at the thought because he hadn’t even really been an asshole then, just more insistent about how things were going to go.

She missed bossy Maverick. Accommodating Maverick was annoying her.

Except when he didn’t accommodate her.

Yes, she knew what that made her sound like.

“Would you like to stay for dinner? I don’t really have anything, but we could have something delivered.”

He stared at her for a beat before shaking his head. “I better not.”

“Oh, okay.”

She walked him to do the door,

“What time do you want me to pick him up tomorrow?”

“Is nine too early?”

“No, but don’t worry about me. Just tell me your schedule and we’ll make it work.”

We’ll make it work. Her new least fucking favorite words.

**

Olivia closed the door behind him and hadn’t finished turning the lock when the first tear started to fall. She’d been so focused on keeping up the façade that she wasn’t sad about leaving, the minute she let her guard down she was a blubbering mess.

She decided to take Sawyer to his room so she wouldn’t wake him with her sobs.
