He grabbed her face and kissed her again. “How could you not know? I tried to show you every day.”

“I thought because I was Sawyer’s mom…”

“I don’t worship Patricia, and she’s the mother of two of my sons.”

“She’s also married to someone else,” she replied dismissively, then added, “And youworshipme?”

“The fucking ground you walk on. I plan on taking you home and showing you just how much.”

They walked out of the conference room hand in hand, and Maverick announced, “Gentlemen, your services are no longer needed.”

Both attorneys smiled, and Larry said, “I figured as much.”

Chapter Forty-Seven

Maverick

“Hey Pam,” he said into the cabin of the Rolls. “How’s Sawyer? Everything okay?”

“The little angel is sleeping right now. He took a bottle, had his diaper changed, and fell sleep in my arms.”

He looked over at Olivia in the passenger seat and smiled as he reached for her hand and squeezed.

“You’re not still holding him, are you?”

“Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. Don’t worry about it.”

He laughed, then asked, “Is it okay if I’m a little later than I thought?”

“If you’re not here by five, he’ll just come home with Auntie Pam.”

“I’ll be there before then. I’m just taking a long lunch.”

“Take as long you need. We’re all good here.”

Maverick ended the call, then asked, “Do you need to phone your office?”

“I already told them I wasn’t coming back.”

“You were that confident, huh?”

“After what Derrick and Nick told me, I was thathopeful. Plus, I decided if it didn’t end well, it was probably a good idea not to go back to work, anyway.”

He glanced over at her as he turned the wheel into his neighborhood.

“What Derrick and Nick told you?”

“They both said you were in love with me, and that basically I was an idiot for not seeing it.”

“Well… they weren’t wrong.”

She playfully slugged his arm. “Hey!”

Maverick held his hand up defensively and laughed. “About me being in love with you!”

“They were right. I was an idiot,” she admitted. “I just didn’t want to be vulnerable.”

“We both were idiots. Being vulnerable is scary.”
