“To what do I owe the pleasure?” she asked.

“Just checking in. I haven’t talked to you in a while.”

“Pretty sad, considering we work at the same hospital.”

“I know, but my hours are a lot more sporadic than yours.”

That was true. The ER was short-staffed and her brother didn’t have a set schedule.

“Are you on your way to work?”

“Nah, I got a hot date.”

Olivia laughed. “Provided you’re not being catfished.”

“We video chatted. I won’t make that mistake again.”

“Oh my god,” she said as she pulled into the pizzeria’s parking lot; the smell of food wafting into her car making her mouth water. “Are you ever going to find someone and settle down?”

“Are you?” he shot back.

“I’d love to, but I need to find the right guy first.”

She didn’t mention the great guy she’d met a few weeks ago. Or the dirty, dirty things they’d done before she slunk out in the middle of the night while he lay sleeping.

“And if I ever meet the right woman, I’ll consider it. In the meantime, this works. I don’t want a relationship right now, but I do want sex. You should try it.”

She bit her tongue.I have tried it, thank you very much. And we didn’t use a condom. She’d kick Evan’s ass if he ever told her something like that.

“But with some rando, E?”

“Believe it or not, I don’t bang just anyone. I am somewhat selective. And the women seem to dig it. I think they find the anonymity liberating so they can get their hidden freak on.”

She thought back to her night with Pete. Knowing she wasn’t going to see him again had made her a lot more uninhibited. She’d allowed herself to be much bolder than she normally would be.

“Just be careful.”

“Always.”

Now she was on her way to tell him she was pregnant. Olivia knew he’d take his cues from her, and once he saw that she was happy, would be thrilled for her. But he was going to have a lot of questions. Ones she wasn’t sure how she was going to answer.

Maybe she wasn’t ready to tell him after all.

After peeking her head into his office and finding his desk empty, she decided that was the universe’s way of telling her to wait.

“Hey Liv!” Steven Ericson called as they walked toward each other in the wide hall. “What are you doing down here?”

Steve was another ER doctor and a friend of her brother’s. He was California handsome and had always been kind to her whenever they interacted, almost like a second brother.

“I was just looking for Evan. I need to tell him—” and she burst into tears as the words, ‘I’m pregnant’ went through her head. She really was going to have a baby.

The idea elated her and scared her shitless at the same time.

“Hey,” he said, pulling her in for a long hug. He smelled nice—his cologne was a subtle woodsy scent and his arms were strong and protective. After a minute of crying as her emotions bounced all over the place, she took a deep breath and smiled up at him. He returned the smile and kissed her forehead, almost exactly like Evan would do if he were there.

“Come on into my office and tell me what’s going on.”

She sat in the visitor’s chair and blurted out, “I’m pregnant. I just found out about an hour ago.”
