He cocked his head. “Really? You didn’t give me the impression of a woman ashamed of her sexuality.” He couldn’t help but smile as he thought back to that night. “Far from it, actually.”

“I wasn’t ashamed of sleeping with you. That part was incredible. But I’d lied to you, and I knew it was wrong.”

His eyebrows knitted in confusion. “What did you lie about? Are you married?”

“No! Of course not! I didn’t lie about that. Just, what I did for a living, and—”

He cut her off. “You’re not an ER nurse?”

“No,” she huffed out a laugh. “I’m an OB/GYN.” Her voice dropped an octave, “So I knew there was a good chance I could get pregnant that night.”

“But you were on birth control.”

She shot him a look, and the truth dawned on him.

“So youweren’ton birth control,” he uttered. “And youwantedto get pregnant.”

He could see her swallow hard before slowly nodding her head.

Inside, Maverick was pissed all over again as the pieces fell into place.

“And you thought I was the perfect sperm donor that you could walk away from without a second glance back.”

Her silence spoke volumes.

“Well, I’ve got some bad news, darlin’. You aren’t walking away from me. At least not with my son. Not without a helluva fight.”

Chapter Nine

Olivia

Oh. Hell. No.

That was exactly what she’d been afraid of.

She lifted her son onto her shoulder to burp him, his bare skin warm against hers. She’d just vowed to protect this little guy, and that’s what she was going to do.

Do not show fear.

She looked Pete in the eye. “What does that mean, exactly?”

“I have a few demands,” he said as he began to unbutton his shirt.

“What are you doing?” she gasped.

He shot her an annoyed look. “Relax. I’m bonding with my son.”

He held out his hands, gesturing that he wanted to hold the baby, and Olivia reluctantly handed him over. Pete moved to the chair by her bed and nestled the now-sleeping newborn against his hairy chest and gently patted his back.

The sight made her solar plexus feel tight.

“Have you chosen a name?” he asked as he stared down at the infant. It struck her how much the two resembled one another.

“Sawyer Evan.”

“Hi Sawyer. I’m your dad.”

He uttered the words so affectionately, she felt dizzy.
