For the first time in a long time, she was able to completely relax. She didn’t have to worry—someone else was going to handle things.

With that knowledge, she dozed off, knowing deep down she was in good hands.

Chapter Eleven

Olivia

Her eyes fluttered open; the light from the window was beginning to fade. What time was it? Where was she?

Suddenly, she was wide awake and sat up with a start.

Where was her baby?

How could she have slept so soundly? Did she sleep through his crying? She was already fucking up.

“He’s right next to you, asleep in his bassinet,” came a deep voice from the corner of the room.

Olivia saw Pete—Maverick—get out of a chair next to the window and walk toward her. She couldn’t decide if she was relieved he was still there or scared.

“How long was I asleep?”

“Not even two hours. He’s been out the whole time.”

That made her feel a little better—about her mothering skills, anyway.

Maverick sat down on her bed next to her with a tentative smile.

His close proximity made her heart beat faster. “Whe—where are Evan and Hope?”

“They went to grab a bite to eat with your parents. A lovely couple, by the way.”

“You met my parents?”

He chuckled. “Your brother made sure to introduce me.”

Fucking Evan.

“I’ll bet that was awkward.”

“A little. But when I explained I intended on marrying you, they relaxed and tried to get to know me better.”

She closed her eyes tight. “Uhhh, you did what?”

“Explained I intended on marrying you. Preferably before we leave the hospital, but I understand if you want to wait and plan for something in another month or two. I was thinking small and intimate, maybe even a destination wedding once you’ve been cleared to travel, and then a bigger party down the road. But I’m open to a big wedding and reception right away if that’s what you’ve always had your heart set on.”

She shook her head as if trying to fix where her brain was obviously short-circuiting.

“Are you insane? I’m not marrying you.”

“Why not? You obviously liked me at one point—enough to get pregnant by me. On purpose.”

“Liking someone is not a good enough reason to marry them.”

With a shrug, he countered, “I’m the father of your child; that’s a good reason.”

“No, it’s not. People all over the world have children every day without the benefit of marriage.”

“So you admit it’d be a benefit.”
