“Take me to a hotel and trick me into impregnating them?”

She laid Sawyer on the bed to change his diaper.

“Okay, if you’re going to bring that up with every conversation we have, then I don’t see the point of us talking anymore.” She pointed to a bag on the floor. “Hand me those wipes and a diaper.”

“Again,” he said as he complied with her request and handed her the items. “You’ve had time to come to terms with being a mom. I’m still wrapping my head around having another child. When I woke up this morning my youngest had just turned nineteen, and then I found out I have a newborn. It’s a lot to take in. I think I’m entitled to get a few more digs in while I process things.”

“It doesn’t make me want to stay with you.”

“Move in,” he corrected, then stood and picked up his freshly changed son. “You’re moving in.”

He stared down at the content baby in his arms. When the little guy smiled just as he started to doze off, Maverick thought his heart was going to burst from his chest.

“Let me amend that. You’re moving in and marrying me.”

He wasn’t missing out on this again.

Chapter Fourteen

Olivia

Her hospital room had turned into Grand Central Station by nine the next morning. In addition to Maverick, her parents, Evan and Hope, and Steven had all dropped in, plus the hospital staff that stopped by to wish her well and, she suspected, to get a look at her baby daddy. She was sure word had gotten out. After all the visitors, she was more tired than she had been the day before.

Rose came in to check on her and took one look at her before barking, “Everyone has to leave. Right. Now. I need to examine Mama, then she needs to rest.”

Maverick stood, slow to shuffle out with the grumbling crowd, and Olivia said softly, “He can stay.”

Rose cocked her head. “You sure?”

She nodded. “I sleep better knowing he’s there for Sawyer.”

“Dad—you may come back in when I’m done with my examine,” Rose announced loudly.

He turned around with a smile. “Is she going to be ready to go home soon?”

Rose eyed him as she put on her gloves. “If everything checks out, I’ll get her discharge papers started.”

Maverick nodded and closed the door.

“I hear he stayed all night with you.”

Olivia stared at the ceiling as her vagina was on display for what seemed like the hundredth time in the span of a day.

“He did.” She felt like she needed to justify it. “He was a great help with Sawyer so I didn’t have to get out of bed to get him when it was time to nurse.”

“Is he going to stay at the house with you? At least until you’re able to walk easier?”

“Um. He wants me to move in with him.”

Her friend raised her eyebrows as she peeled off her gloves. “Oh? Is that what you want?”

“I wouldn’t mind the help,” Olivia admitted. “And he’s right—we both need to bond with the baby and get to know each other better.”

“So, it’d only be temporary.”

Olivia hesitated, not sure how to answer that, so Rose asked, “It wouldn’t be temporary?”

“I don’t know. At this point, I’m just taking it one day at a time.”
