She glared at him. How could he be so insufferable? He’d seemed like such a good guy the night they’d met.

“Why? You said your boys’ stepdad is a nice man.”

“He is. It doesn’t mean I’m willing to do it again.”

“You don’t honestly believe you’ll win? There’s no way a judge would keep a baby from his mother.”

“I’m not suggesting you’ll never get to see him. But it will be on my terms.”

Olivia turned her gaze to her son suckling on her breast.

She wasn’t going to lose him; she didn’t care what it cost. She’d go broke before she let that happen.

The irony of why she’d decided to have a one-night stand instead of going to a fertility clinic—so she wouldn’t blow through her savings—wasn’t lost on her.

His tone was gentler when he said, “Get to know me, Olivia. You’ll find I’m not a bad guy.”

“I never thought you were—until you started talking about taking my child from me.”

“I don’t want to take him from you, but I’m not going to miss out on raising him, either. Being married and living together solves everything.”

“Everything except the fact we’re not in love.” She hastily added, “And I’m in love with someone else.”

He shrugged. “Are ya, though? I mean, if you were my girlfriend, I would have hired a snowplow to get me to the hospital, but that’s just me. And hey, we like each other—at least, I like you. And we certainly have sexual chemistry.”

“Hadsexual chemistry. Past tense.”

He studied her face. “If you wanna believe that, sure.Had. Anyway, you have your own room.”

“I have my own house.”

“You’re not a prisoner, darlin’. You can go anytime.”

“I’m not going anywhere without my son.”

“Well then, I guess you should probably get comfortable here.”

Maverick

He brought a tray with two plates of lasagna, a basket of garlic bread, napkins, silverware, and water, and set it on the table in the sitting area next to the fireplace.

“Here, let me take him so you can eat,” he said as he reached for Sawyer.

She protested. “He needs to be changed.”

The corner of his mouth turned up. “I know how to change a diaper, darlin’.”

Putting a towel down on his bed, along with wipes and a fresh diaper, Maverick laid the baby down and unsnapped his onesie to unfasten the dirty diaper while Sawyer kicked and wiggled.

“Little man,” Maverick pleaded as he tried to clean his son’s bottom. “Ya gotta hold still.”

He looked over to see Olivia shaking with laughter as she took a bite of food.

With renewed determination, he lifted Sawyer’s legs and slid the clean diaper under him, managing to get one tab fastened before the infant kicked again and sent the diaper askew.

“Son, work with me, here.”
