Granted, she had been feeling more like her old self lately, and sleeping next to the muscular, shirtless man every night had made her well-aware of her healed female parts, while watching him with Sawyer had been doing things to her heart.

Yet, did she want to be fuck buddies with her husband? The man she’d planned on divorcing sooner rather than later? It seemed like a bad idea.

But the fidelity clause of their prenup, not to mention her own morals, meant he was her only option if she wanted any kind of physical intimacy with a three-dimensional man and not a vibrating penis substitute. And she knew first-hand how good Maverick was in bed.

What to do, what to do?

She decided her best option was to do nothing.

“Do you want to get takeout for lunch?”

Chapter Twenty-Six

Maverick

He thought he’d been making inroads with her, then she did an about face and asked about lunch.

He could practically hear thewomp wompof the soundtrack to his sex life.

But they were married, he didn’t need to rush things. He was playing the long game.

“Yeah, takeout sounds good. What did you have in mind?”

She surprised him by suggesting they order from a local pizzeria, specifically, their “Pizza, wings, and breadsticks special.”

He gave her an inquisitive look. “That’s a special?”

“Well, I’m not sure if it still is. It’s been a while since I’ve been there. But it was a staple in my and Evan’s diet when we were in high school. We both worked there our senior year.”

“Sounds good. It should tide us over until later tonight. Juanita is making us a New Year’s Eve dinner.”

They ended up eating in the family room together while Sawyer slept. He’d been cranky since getting his shots that morning, so it was a relief that he didn’t wake up when they brought him in from the car.

“Poor baby,” Olivia said when she put him on the floor next to the couch “First your parents starve you this morning, then they made you get poked with needles.”

Their latest attempt at getting him to take a bottle had been that morning, and they’d been wildly unsuccessful.

“Thanks for going today,” she said as she opened the food boxes on the coffee table.

“Of course. I told you, I don’t want to miss anything this time.”

“I’m glad we found you again. You’re a great dad. Sawyer’s lucky to have you.”

It sounded like a compliment, but there was something about her demeanor that seemed sad.

That was the only reason he didn’t throw in a dig about lying to him that she was on birth control.

“Thanks. That means a lot. I’m glad you found me, too.”

Olivia

Sawyer was happier when he woke from his nap, and Maverick took him from his seat and the two had an animated discussion as they sat on the couch together.

The baby watched his dad’s face carefully and broke out into his first smile, mirroring Maverick’s. He kicked his legs excitedly and let out a happy squeal.

Olivia’s heart was a pile of goo at the sight.
