“It just is confusing.”

No, what’s confusing is you.

“I don’t understand. What exactly is confusing?”

“Us. If we’re sleeping in the same bed, it’s like we’re a couple.”

He rubbed the corner of his eyebrow, trying to mask his frustration. “Uh, we’re married. How much more of a couple could we be?”

“You know what I mean. We’re married, but we’re notmarried.”

What the fuck is she talking about?

“What would make usmarried?”

“I don’t know. If we were in love and wanted to be together, not because we wanted to avoid a custody battle.”

He’d thought they’d worked past that.

“Oh.

She tucked her legs under her and sat up straighter. “Let me ask you this—if it wasn’t for Sawyer, do you think we’d be together?”

“Well, no. You took off in the middle of the night without leaving me a way to get in touch with you.”

He could tell by her expression that wasn’t the answer she wanted, so he tried to do damage control. “If you hadn’t wanted to get pregnant, would you have gone to a hotel room with me that night?”

She thought about it for a second then shook her head. “No, probably not. I don’t make a habit of having one-night stands.”

“I don’t, either, and yet, we both did that night. And we got a beautiful baby boy out of it. So, it doesn’t matter whether we’d be together if we didn’t have him. Wedohave him, and that’s what counts.”

Olivia

How fucking romantic.

He’d hurt her feelings with his answer. She knew it was stupid, but she’d wanted him to say they would have been together no matter what. Just like the universe had brought them together for Sawyer, it would have found a way to bring them together.

His stupid, practical reply felt like rejection to her vulnerable ego—that was the only reason she could think of why she lashed out.

“If only I’d waited a few more months. I would have had the love of my life’s baby.”

Maverick pursed his lips as he deliberated what she’d said. Finally, he spoke. “The love of your life, huh? The one who never even came to to the hospital? I think you dodged a bullet, sweetheart.”

“How could he visit me when you were standing guard the whole time?”

“Like I said, if you were my girlfriend, nothing would have stopped me from being there.”

Except I’m your wife, and you couldn’t care less.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Maverick

They were back to being distant roommates, but at least she wasn’t passive-aggressive this time. In fact, they both seemed to go out of their way to be accommodating to one another.

Unfortunately, there were no repeat trips to Orgasm Town. He suspected that was part of the reason she’d been so cooperative, so he wouldn’t throw her over his shoulder again like a Neanderthal.
