“Now? Why?”

“Something you said the other day. About if had you just been more patient—”

She cut him off. “Oh. I was tired; I should have never said that.”

“Usually when your defenses are down is when you tell the truth.”

“I’m not lying. I’m not in contact with my ex. I didn’t sleep with him while I was pregnant. You and I have an agreement, Pete. I’m not going to be unfaithful, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

He believed she wouldn’t cheat, but that didn’t mean her heart wasn’t elsewhere. He needed to fix that.

“Would you like to go out to dinner with me tonight? Maybe your parents could watch Sawyer.”

Olivia

Go out to dinner with him?

“Like, on a date?” she blurted out.

“Yeah, I guess. Is it still called a date if we’re married?”

“Yes, it’s still called that.”

“Then I guess I’m asking you out on a date.”

He’d rattled her with his line of questioning about her ‘boyfriend.’ She’d technically told the truth. Casey Montoya was her ex, and they hadn’t slept together while she was pregnant. She just failed to mention it’d been almost two years since they broke up. Then he took a sharp left and asked her to dinner. What was going on?

“Why?”

“I don’t follow. Why what?”

“Why are you asking me out?”

“Because you’re my wife, and we haven’t really done anything together that didn’t involve Sawyer. I thought maybe we should change that. And you definitely need to get out of the house.”

“But you said yourself the whole reason we’re together is because of our son. What’s the point of us going out without him?”

The corner of his mouth hitched. “Because we’re grownups, Olivia, and we need some grownup time away from him.”

She felt her spine stiffen. She couldn’t sleep with Maverick again. She’d never been good at keeping sex and feelings separate.

“What do you mean,grownup time?”

He shrugged. “Time with other adults. Having a conversation that doesn’t involve feeding schedules or changing diapers. Maybe even have a cocktail or two. Sawyer’s taking a bottle now, and there’s enough breastmilk in the fridge that he’ll be fine if you want to imbibe.”

A martini did sound amazing. It’d been almost a year since she’d had one.

Even though she was leery of his intentions, she found herself saying, “I’ll call my mom.”

“If your parents can’t watch him, I’m sure Nick would. Or one of my brothers. Well, probably not Derrick, since he’s always at Flannigan’s on the weekends.”

“Everyweekend?”

“He works six days a week.”

“Wow, that doesn’t leave him time for a social life.”
