Their conversation at dinner was friendly. Maverick suggesting a truce, coupled with the bottle of delicious red wine Frank had sent over, plus the cocktails when they first arrived, seemed to put them both at ease with each other.

That was why when he suggested they go dancing instead of going home, she thought it sounded like an excellent idea.

“That sounds fun. I didn’t know you danced.”

“I don’t. But I thought I should at least once with my wife while she’s still my wife.”

The pang that their time together was really coming to an end hit her solar plexus.

“Oh. Well, it’ll be fun.”

Famous last words.

Turned out, being in his arms as he guided her across the dance floor was bittersweet torture. With his right hand firmly planted on her hip while their left hands intertwined, making the sparkle of her diamond occasionally catch her eye, it was easy to let go and pretend they were a couple in love. Add in the warmth of his body next to hers and the smell of his cologne… even without the alcohol, she didn’t stand a chance. And with the alcohol? Well, things were going to get interesting.

When she laid her head on his shoulder, he couldn’t help but wrap his hand around her waist and pull her tighter against him.

“You really do look stunning tonight,” he murmured against her hair.

An older couple glided by, and the woman looked at them with a smile. “You make a lovely couple.”

Yeah, don’t we?he wanted to lash out. Instead, he nodded his acknowledgement while Olivia murmured her thanks.

She looked up at him with a soft smile, and he found himself lowering his face to gently kiss her lips.

Knowing their relationship now had an expiration date must have helped lower her walls, because she returned the kiss without hesitation.

The song ended, but the kiss did not. They were in their own little bubble and Maverick didn’t want it to burst.

Slowly, the rest of the world came back into focus, and she broke the kiss. Rather than let her go, however, he continued to hold her tight as he rested his forehead against hers.

“I like when we’re in a truce.”

“Me, too,” she whispered softly.

They held hands as they walked out of the bar to the valet stand. After Maverick gave the man his ticket, he noticed her shivering under her wrap and pulled her into his embrace. She didn’t think she could ever get enough of his masculine scent.

His SUV quickly appeared, and he helped her in the passenger seat, then came around to meet the valet at the driver’s door, tipping him before he slid behind the wheel.

The clock on the dash read 11:05.

“Where to next?”

His question surprised her. She’d been under the impression they were going to go home and consummate their truce.

“Oh, um… I’m not sure? We could go to Flannigan’s, I guess?”

“We could stop in there for a nightcap.”

“We probably shouldn’t stay too long, though. I’m sure my parents are already asleep on the couch.”
