He doubled down his efforts, and she chanted, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” until she lurched off the countertop as her body spasmed from head to toe and she cried out, “Fuuuuuck!’

Maverick looked up with a satisfied smile. Making his wife come was his new favorite pastime.

“You are so good at that,” she panted.

“Sweetheart, you taste so fucking good, I could eat you every day, twice a day, and want more.”

“I think I would self-combust from orgasm-overload.”

“No such thing, darlin’.”

She sat up and glanced around the room.

“I saw something in a porno once that I’ve always wanted to try.”

His ears perked up. “You have my attention.”

“The island might be too high, although…” she looked at where his waist hit the counter. “You are pretty tall. Let’s try it. If it doesn’t work, we’ll move to the dining room table.”

“Try what? Use your words, woman!”

She spun around and put her back to him, then laid down, so her head was off the counter.

“I’d rather show you.”

He stared at her, not moving, then finally mumbled, “That’s fucking hot,” as he reached for his belt.

Chapter Forty-one

Olivia

After their tryst in the kitchen Maverick helped her clean up from dinner, then slipped away to his home office to get some work done while she nursed Sawyer and prepared him for bed.

As she sat in the rocking chair in the nursery, she thought about her and Maverick’s time together since calling a truce. It had been wonderful, but every day it seemed to hurt a little more. Being in love with a man who treated her well and was amazing in bed sucked when the man in question didn’t love her back. His kindness felt almost cruel at times.

How was any another man going to be able to measure up to him?

Thanks for ruining all men for me, Pete.

Olivia shook her head. No! She’d find someone someday. She had to, right? She was entitled to be with a man who loved her.

“Mommy’s going to get a new husband,” she told Sawyer as she stared down at him at her breast. “And he’ll treat us just as great as your daddy.”

Even as she said the words, she knew they were a lie. No man—even if he did love her and Sawyer—would care for them like Maverick did.

In her heart, she knew Maverick would let her stay if she wanted. They were perfectly happy and got along well, but she knew the longer she was there, the more it was going to hurt in the end.

“I deserve the fairytale.”

He couldn’t help but feel slighted as he sat in his office listening to the baby monitor.
