‘Maybe clouds wish they had arms,’ I muse. ‘Maybe they are scared.’

‘Are you high?’

‘Shh. Don’t make puns in serious situations, Chase. Those clouds are so disappointed in you right now.’

He makes a strangled noise that sounds like a laugh.

‘It’s the same with life though, isn’t it?’ I continue. ‘You say you’re afraid of flying away, but I say you won’t know if you’ll grow wings until you jump. Wow,’ I add. ‘That sounded so much better in my head.’

His body shakes, and we lay there laughing like idiots until my cheeks hurt and my belly aches.

‘I’m out of beer,’ Cassie announces. ‘You wouldn’t mind going to the car and grabbing another crate, would you, Greg?’

‘I’ll get it.’ I stand and dust off the grass from my skirt.

‘Why?’ She eyes me warily.

‘Could do with the walk.’ But that’s a lie. I just don’t want her to take advantage of Greg, not when he’s so content on his Switch.

‘Whatever.’

Chase stands as well. ‘I’ll go with you.’

At this, Archer glances at him.

‘It’s fine,’ I say quickly.

‘The crate is in my car,’ Chase points out.

‘Don’t be long,’ Archer says. He doesn’t look away until we disappear from sight.

???

‘You drive anAudi?’ I don’t know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t this. I run my fingers over the glossy grey finish. ‘How do you afford insurance on this thing?’

Chase flashes a grin as he pops the boot. ‘Drugs.’

I gape.

‘Relax. If I was a drug dealer, I wouldn’t drive an Audi. I’d have a 2015 Camaro, or a 2017 Mustang. I live with my uncle. Together we buy and sell cars, and we make good profit.’

'You don't live with your parents?' As soon as the words are out, I regret them. I know how complicated parent relationships can be.

But he says, 'I don't remember my parents. They decided drugs and alcohol were more important, and my uncle took me in.'

I want to hug him, but I quickly change the subject so Idon'tdo that. ‘Why not the 1971 second gen Camaro?’

He peers around the boot. ‘What?’

‘Wouldn’t it be better to go for the 1971 second gen instead of the 2015? I mean, it’s sexy, it has bucket seats, and it’s more economical than the 2015. Not to mention the second gen fixed most of the issues the first gen had.’

He stares at me. ‘You know about cars?’

I shrug, not feeling at all humble. ‘My dad used to be a mechanic, so I sort of grew up around them.’

‘Let me guess. Your favourite car is a 1971 second gen Camaro?’

‘Of course not,’ I say sarcastically.
