We compose each other quickly.

I pull up my panties and shorts, and he stuffs his cock back in his shorts.

That’s all we manage. We lie on the ground in silence, looking at the bright blue sky. Minutes go by until we hear sounds from a family walking feet away from us, discussing where they should picnic.

I glance at Sebastian.

If anyone sees us, we’ll look like a couple relaxing by the creek. Nothing unusual.

“Well, the first time you bring a girl on your hike, and look what happened.”

“You’ve ruined hiking for me. I’ll never have this much fun again.”

I chuckle, then sit, pretending to look at the nature around us.I’ll never have this much fun again.

I shouldn’t, but my overthinking brain is already doing the homework. Does he mean that we’ll never hike again, as in, once this weekend is over, life resumes as before?

My heart shrinks. We agreed to go back to life as usual after the weekend. I can’t ask for a commitment from him. Not only would it be super awkward, but it could create the type of nonsexual tension that could be the nail in the coffin of our professional relationship.

If I pressure him or let him see how much I’ve come to care for him so soon, I’ll be screwed.

If I want to save face and my job, I need to play this smoothly. I sigh. I’ve met someone who gets me. And giving him up will be the hardest ask.

Sebastian

“How do you like it?”

Kendall picks a spicy tuna roll from the ornate sushi boat in front of us. “Oh, it’s delicious.” She eats it and lifts another piece to my mouth with her chopsticks. “Try this one.”

I accept her offer and swallow the sushi. She’s right—it’s delicious. Though if I’m honest, even if we weren’t in a sophisticated restaurant, I’d still enjoy it. I’d enjoy eating from the dumpster with her.

I can’t believe it’s Sunday night already. Spending it with Kendall has been the best time I’ve shared with a woman in many years. Maybe ever. It’s hard to explain. It’s easy and light but also captivating and emotional. She makes me think about things I usually avoid and where I stand on them.

I feel… safe, like I can share anything with her.

Should I tell her our liaison wasn’t as spontaneous as it seems? She’s been on my mind for months, even if I didn’t act on it before Friday night.

“Try this one too.” Kendall scoops another piece and brings it to my mouth.

In a past life, I’d hate to be fed—especially in public. The idea is rather silly. With her, though, it’s natural, and I don’t think twice.

I swallow it and reach for a glass of wine when I hear a feminine voice call my name, “Sebastian. Oh, look at you.”

I raise my gaze to find Stephanie, a parent from Brynlee’s snooty private school. The woman my mother tried to set me up with. In her dreams. Stephanie’s vibe is far too self-absorbed for me. She’s perfectly attractive, with her long blonde hair and slim figure. But the way she talks and moves reminds me of someone who’s too worried about herself all the time.

“Hi, Stephanie.”

She leans closer, and her gaze darts from me to Kendall. “Oh, I recognize you! Brynlee’s nanny, right? How nice of your boss to bring you somewhere like this.” Condescension drips from her voice as she makes a circular movement with her index finger.

I know the game she’s playing. She wants to make Kendall feel like shit and imply she’s better than her. Just a nanny. The help.

Irritation crawls under my skin. “Glad you’ve already met Kendall, my girlfriend.”

Stephanie’s eyes widen, and pink stains her high cheekbones. “Oh. Yes, we have.” Her tone is a lot quieter now.

I nod. “Great. If you don’t mind, we’re having dinner. Wonderful to see you.”
