“Um, it’s after midnight, darling. Pretty sure you should get home.”

“I’m coming back tomorrow morning, anyway, right? So I can just stay here!” she smiled and plunked her head against my chest.

“Stay here? And what will your parents say?”

“They like you, so they will be happy,” she said, her voice muffled against my sweater.

“And how am I supposed to explain—”

“You don’t. Think about it. Keaton already told your parents that my family is coming to the party and to help set up for it. So that’s why I’m here in the morning. You don’t have to show up early with everything that went down, you have the perfect excuse. Plus nobody is going to try and disturb you, anyway.” Tenley tightened her arms around my body, and I chuckled, planting a kiss against the top of her beanie.

“What about clothes? I don’t have any that would fit you,” I asked, and she groaned.

“That one I don’t have an answer for,” she muttered and then shot back from my chest. Looking up at my eyes she smirked. “I could see if my mom would bring some in the morning when I call and tell her I’ll be staying.”

“And what about the lights I need to still put up with Keaton?”

“You’re still doing that? After what happened?”

“He’s not the one that said something rude,” I replied, and she nodded.

“True. Well, take me to your house first, and then you can come back and finish that,” she answered.

“You need to call your parents before any of that. I’m not about to get in trouble with your dad a week into dating,” I stated, and she grinned.

“Yay!” She pulled her arms from my waist and dug into the pocket of her dress. “By the way, did you see, I’ve got pockets!” she giddily said, tapping an icon on her phone and placing it to her ear. I smiled, a soft chuckle leaving my chest.

The idea of her being here with me all night was intoxicating to say the least, and almost relieving to say the most. There was a sense of comfort and solace that came with the idea that despite everything, despite the insanity and whirlwind that our relationship had been so far, she found being with me desirable.

So much so that she was actively seeking more of it.

“Mom!” she said into the receiver, and then muffled sounds answered, words that I couldn’t decipher.

“So, everything is good there? I’m sorry to wake you up. I hadn’t realized quite how late it really was,” she continued, muttering a couple ‘uh huhs’ every so often. Lifting my hands from the fence railing, I placed them on her legs and mindlessly slid them up and down, waiting for her to finish.

“Could you bring me a change of clothes in the morning when everyone comes to help set up?” she asked, and I heard a shriek come from the phone. “Calm down, Mom. Yes, everything is fine. Mom!” she giggled and closed her eyes while I watched her for a moment. The way the silver light draped across her face, beautiful shadows dancing in the dark night.

Her warm breath steamed with every word she spoke. “Love you!” she exclaimed with a grin and then hung up the phone.

“Well?” I lifted a brow.

“Did you not hear her scream in excitement? She nearly blew my eardrum out,” Tenley answered.

I chuckled. “Alright, let’s go. I want to get the lights up quickly, since I definitely would rather be at home now.” I winked, and she grinned. Stepping away from the rail, she slid down and skipped toward one of the several Razors parked along the fence line.

Shoving my hands in my pockets, I sauntered after, happy despite the mess. Finally, after how many attempts, there would be at least a night of uninterrupted time with Tenley. She seemed just as excited as I was for this next adventure.

A couple soft flakes of snow drifted to the ground, landing quietly against the brim of my hat. Maybe, if I was even more lucky, a snowstorm would roll in overnight making it especially difficult for anyone to even happen up to my home.

“Weston, hurry your butt up!” Tenley shouted from the Razor’s passenger seat. I hadn’t even realized how slow I was moving, lost in thought about her.

Hastening my steps, I quickly plopped myself in the driver’s side, and we were zooming up the side of the mountain in a heartbeat.

“By the way, I think you owe me a horseback ride,” Tenley said, crossing her arms with a smug look on her face.

“Owe you? I never promised you one to begin with,” I teased.

“Technically, you did, since that was the plan before Butch mentioned the truck.”
