“I have a matching one for you.” She grinned, her hair pulled up into a massive bun on top of her head. She had on this cute headband with Christmas light bulbs instead of ears on top, and they were blinking red and green.

“They make onesies big enough for me?” I asked, and she nodded.

“Well, sort of. I bought mine and then went into town to that fabric and seamstress store, and the lady there altered one for you,” she replied, and rolled off of the bed. I shook my head, knowing that there was no getting out of this. But I also didn’t mind. I actually wanted to join in. Only for her.

“You see the irony behind the design you picked, don’t you darling?” I said, following her to her suitcase where she pulled out the onesie. It was folded neatly with a green string wrapped around it, holding it together and tied off in a small bow.

“Exactly why I chose this one.” She grinned and then the smile fell. “Though, I am a little upset about something.”

“What’s that?” I asked, gently taking the extended gift from her hands.

“We’ve gone this entire holiday without you kissing me under the mistletoe once yet.” She sighed, flopping down on the bed upset.

I slid down my shorts, ignoring the fact that she was watching me as she slapped her hands over her eyes. “Why do you keep doing that?” she gasped.

“Doing what? I have my underwear on,” I replied. “Besides, it’s nothing you haven’t seen before,” I teased.

She hiccupped. “So?” her voice cracked, and I laughed, stepping into the footless onesie. Getting it up and over my shoulders was a bit of a problem, and it was tighter than I would’ve liked. My thoughts would have to be very, very clean, or we might have an issue. Finishing zipping it up, I placed myself directly in front of Tenley.

“What do you think?” I asked, and she peered through cracked fingers.

Slowly, her hands slid from her face, and her eyes wandered down and then back up my body.

“You checked me out.” I grinned.

She rolled her eyes. “It’s nothing I haven’t seen before.” She waved her hand, dismissing my comment, and I chuckled. “But it looks good.”

“Then how about we head to my mom’s for breakfast. They’ll be opening gifts soon and—”

“Gifts! I forgot to take them over last night before we fell asleep!” She shot up from the edge of the bed.

“I took care of it. Don’t worry,” I replied.

She narrowed her gaze. “You didn’t try to peek at yours, did you?” she asked, and I shook my head. “Okay, good. Then we can go.”

“Oh, one more thing. I’d like to take you out on a date. An official date.” I headed to the bedroom door and pulled it open, waiting for her.

She furrowed her brows as excitement grew on her beautiful face. “When? What would we be doing?” she cautiously asked.

“How does tonight sound? And I will make a Christmas dinner.” I smiled. “You know, since we never got our first dinner or first date, why not try it again?”

Her smile widened, the brightness on her face so tangible that my entire soul felt light. “What a perfect way to spend our first Christmas together. When will we try to sneak away from our family?”

I chuckled and shook my head as she marched past me and out into the family room. “We won’t be. I already told my mom.”

She giggled and skipped to the stairs as I followed, feeling as giddy as her behavior was displaying. “Which means everyone knows?”

“Naturally,” I replied.

“I love it,” she whispered and my heart fluttered as we gathered our coats and shoved our feet into our boots. Gift exchange this morning, a quick nap followed by stuffing our faces with candy, and then it was finally time for our first date.

My stomach flip flopped in anticipation and nerves prickled through my veins. No, it didn’t need to be perfect, but the stakes were a little higher than before. All I prayed for was that we actually succeeded. Please let me have this one date. One last shot at a simple first date.

Chapter 26

Tenley kissed her dad on the cheek, after handing him her present, before plopping herself down squarely on my lap. I placed my empty hand on her leg as she giggled, watching him slowly pull at the sticky tape. Glancing over my shoulder, I lifted the gift in my hand.

“Remington, here’s—” I began, but he was gone. I furrowed my brows, scanning the space behind me. His wife was laughing with Tyson, who was holding his new girlfriend’s hand. Annie was digging through some of the candy she’d gotten in her stocking, but my brother wasn’t around.
