“Well, let’s not borrow trouble. Let’s enjoy the calm while we have it,” Dillon said.

“I know,” Jesse said. “Anyway, let me know if you hear anything.”

“I will,” Dillon said.

He locked the door behind Jesse and cleaned the store. He decided that it would be rude to show up at Clara’s door empty handed so he stopped by the grocery store.

Clara smiled widely when she opened the door to his knock.

He handed her the cake and said, “This is Zeke’s favorite. How did you know?”

“Because it was my favorite when I was a boy.” Dillon laughed.

Just then, Zeke walked up to them, wiping the sleep out of his eyes.

“Zeke and Reno just had a little nap,” Clara said.

“As energetic as he is all day, I can see where he needs a little recharge,” Dillon said.

“Mom, I’m starving. When is dinner going to be ready?”

“It’s ready right now,” Clara said.

“I didn’t know what you wanted on your tacos, so I figured you could make your own,” she said.

In addition to the normal beef, tomato, lettuce, and cheese, she had jalapenos, avocados, onion, salsa, and a few other things laid out.

“I think I’m going to need a bigger tortilla.” Dillon laughed as he tried to stuff everything into the burrito-sized tortilla.

Zeke watched Dillon and asked his mother for all the same things that Dillon had.

“You don’t like avocados or jalapenos,” Clara protested.

“I do now,” Zeke said.

“Okay,” Clara said.

Dillon thought that it was cute that Zeke was trying to imitate him.

“Can Reno have a taco, too?” Zeke asked.

“No. I told you last night that he needs to eat dog food. People food isn’t good for him,” Clara said.

Zeke didn’t argue with his mother, but Dillon noticed that Zeke snuck bites of hamburger to the puppy. Clara noticed it, too, but just smiled and shook her head.

“I had a dog when I was a little boy,” Dillon said.

“What was his name?” Zeke asked.

“His name was Tiger. He was my best friend. We did everything together,” Dillon said. “Tiger even learned how to climb a ladder so that he could get into my tree house with me. The problem was, that he couldn’t climb back down so my father had to rescue him every time.”

Zeke laughed as though that was the funniest story that he ever heard.

After dinner, Zeke cleared the table while Clara scraped the dishes and put them in the dishwasher.

“Can we playSorry!?” Zeke asked.

Clara looked at Dillon who smiled and nodded.
