Where is this going?Clara asked. What does he feel about me?

Dillon hadn’t given her any clues as to his feelings for her. She had no idea whether he just looked at them as having a casual relationship with benefits or if he thought that they had a more serious relationship.

What do you want?Clara asked herself.

Clara thought about the question. She was sure that she wasn’t ready for a serious relationship yet. She had only been divorced for six months and she wasn’t ready to jump into anything else. On the other hand, the thought of not having Dillon around was depressing. It was more than a sexual attraction for her, although she couldn’t put a name to her feelings.

You are going to drive yourself crazy,Clara thought. You need to worry about all of this later and get some sleep.

She curled up in bed, once again remembering what it felt like to have his arms wrapped around her, and she fell into a deep sleep.

Zeke was full of energy the next morning. He got dressed and took Reno out to go potty. Then, he literally zoomed around the house, with Reno at his heels, while she got breakfast ready. She had a full pot of coffee ready for herself and wished that she could go back to bed for another couple of hours.

Clara had to admit that she was impressed with Zeke. He centered his young life on taking care of his new best friend. She had to admit that John actually did a good thing, although for all the wrong reasons.

Getting Zeke to sit down and eat his breakfast was like trying to direct a herd of feral cats. She finally got him packed up and ready to head into the café.

Clara was still tired when she got to work. She got Zeke settled and then went to make herself a cup of coffee when Jamie rushed in.

“Sorry that I’m late,” Jamie said.

“No worries. Is everything okay?” Clara asked.

Jamie was pale and visibly upset.

“No,” Jamie said. “One of my friends has disappeared. I’m scared to death that the hunters did something to her, and the war is starting up again.”

“What do you mean?” Clara asked.

“I told you about the war between the mundane humans and the shifters in the area,” Jamie said.

“Yesss,” Clara said, slowly.

“About a month ago, a couple of shifters went missing in the area. It is rumored that they went up on the mountain so that they could shift and get their exercise. They were never seen again.”

Clara was shocked.

“You’re saying that the story that you told me is true. You’re telling me that shifters really do exist.”

“Yes, they do exist,” Jamie said.

After a minute, Jamie said, “I trust you. Come into the back room with me. I’ll prove it to you.”

Curious, Clara followed Jamie into the back room. She was shocked to see Jamie undressing.

Jamie saw the look on her face and said, “Don’t worry. Shifters tend to undress before they shift so that they don’t rip their clothes.”

Once Jamie was completely naked, she shifted. Clara’s jaw dropped. There was a large black bear standing in the same place where her friend had been and there was no sign of Jamie.

Clara cautiously approached the bear with her hand outstretched and touched her head.

“You’re a bear,” Clara said, not believing her own eyes.

She ran her hand over the bear’s back and then looked into the bear’s eyes.

“Jamie?” Clara asked.

The bear nodded.
