“Of course, we can.”

Dillon led the way up the trail with Zeke right behind him. Clara brought up the rear. She listened as Dillon pointed out the different trees in the area. He showed Zeke where there were some trees with bear claw marks on them.

“There are bears in the woods?” Zeke asked, wide eyed.

“There are lots of different kinds of animals in the woods,” Dillon said. “There are bears, wolves, mountain lions, coyotes, deer, and lots of others.”

“Wow, do you think that we might see any of them?”

“I don’t know. They are all usually pretty shy around humans so they don’t come around when they can smell or hear humans,” Dillon said.

“Oh,” Zeke said. “Maybe if we’re really quiet.”

“Maybe so,” Dillon said.

Zeke was excited when they did come across a couple of deer. They looked at the humans for a few minutes before they dashed off into the woods.

“That was cool,” Zeke said.

The trio made their way to the waterfall and ate their lunch. Zeke was constantly looking around while he gobbled his food. He carefully put his trash back in his backpack and then started walking around, peering into bushes and looking up at the trees.

“Don’t get out of my eyesight,” Clara cautioned.

“I won’t, Mom.”

Zeke stared at the river and started to walk toward the rushing water.

“Is there fish in here?” he asked.

“Yes, but don’t get too close,” Dillon said.

The words were barely out of his mouth when Zeke’s foot slipped, and he splashed into the cold water.

Dillon was up like a flash. He stripped quickly and then shifted into his wolf form as he leaped into the water.

The current was pulling the little boy down river quickly. It was strong.

Zeke screamed for help as Dillon swam across the current to grab ahold of Zeke.

Put your arms around me,Dillon told Zeke telepathically, hoping that the child would hear and obey.

Zeke either heard him or went by instinct because he wrapped his arms around the wolf’s torso.

Dillon turned direction and swam back across the current. He strained his muscles as the river tried to sweep them down stream. Finally, they made it back to shore.

Clara, who had been running alongside of them on the shore grabbed Zeke and held him close to her, heedless of the boy’s soaked clothes.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Yes,” Zeke said. “The wolf saved me.”

Clara looked over at the large wolf that lay panting on the shore.

“Thank you,” she said. “Are you okay?” she asked.

I’m fine.

A shocked look came over Clara’s face.
