“My wife. Where is my wife?” he demanded.

Before Jamie could reply, Clara came out from the kitchen.

“John. You are early,” Clara said. “And I’m not your wife. I haven’t been your wife for more than six months.”

John just growled at her.

He was about to reply when Zeke walked up to him and said, “Hi, Daddy.”

“Hey, Buddy. Are you ready to go?” John asked.

“Yep,” Zeke said. “Are we still going to the zoo?”

“Of course,” John said.

He looked at Clara and said, “You’re coming to pick him up?”

“We’ll meet at our usual place at six,” Clara said.

She wasn’t about to meet him at his house and give him the chance to trap her there. She also had to admit that she was slightly afraid of him. He had never hit her before, but he had raised his hand to her as though he was going to.

Saturday morning, Clara visited Dillon at his store.

“This is embarrassing, but I ran out of sugar and won’t get a shipment in until Monday,” she said. “I need to buy quite a bit.”

“Borrowing a cup of sugar from the neighbor, huh?” He grinned.

His sexy grin nearly took her breath away.

“Something like that,” Clara said.

“How are you settling in?” Dillon asked.

“Good. Jamie is a dream and practically runs the café herself. She knows how to work all the equipment and is good with everybody,” Clara said. “Zeke seems to be adjusting well to his new surroundings.”

“Glad to hear it. He seems like he is a smart kid,” Dillon said.

“A little too smart for his own good,” Clara said.

Their hands touched when she handed her credit card over to pay for the sugar. An electric spark flowed through her at the touch. She had never felt anything like it, not even with John. A warmth spread through her, and she was sure that her cheeks were turning red. She felt like a young schoolgirl talking to her first crush.

“Let me help you with all of this,” he said, grabbing a couple of bags of sugar.

“I appreciate it,” Clara said.

He ordered a cup of coffee while he was there.

“It’s on the house,” Clara said.

He grinned at her, raised his cup, and then left. Clara’s eyes followed him out the door.

“He’s a sexy specimen, isn’t he?” Jamie asked.

“Yes, he is,” Clara said.

“He’s not seeing anyone,” Jamie hinted.

“I don’t know if I’m ready for a relationship,” Clara said. “Besides, I barely know him.”
