He wondered what she came over to talk about and why she was putting it off. This couldn’t be good.

Dillon set the coffee cup in front of her along with the creamer and some sugar. He sat down across from her and waited.

“I was shocked when you asked me to marry you. We hadn’t ever talked about our feelings for one another or the status of our relationship,” Clara said. “That, on top of what had just happened to me, I didn’t know what to think.”

Dillon nodded but didn’t say anything.

“I have been afraid of my own feelings for a long time, because to be honest with you, I’ve loved you for a long time – really since our first date. I know that it sounds ridiculous, but there was just something different about you. I couldn’t stop thinking about you, but I wasn’t ready to admit that I had fallen in love with you,” Clara said.

“Clara, I…” Dillon started.

She put her hand on his and said, “No, let me finish, please.”

“I made a mistake when I told you no when you asked me to marry you. If you still want to marry me, I would love to marry you. I can’t think of a better blessing than to have you in my and Zeke’s lives.”

Dillon smiled widely and said, “Yes, the proposal still stands. Hang on a minute.”

He disappeared into his bedroom and returned with a box. He opened it, pulled out the ring and slid it onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

“I love it,” Clara said. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” Dillon replied.

He leaned over and kissed her, gently at first, and then the kiss grew more insistent. The kiss spoke of an enduring love and an intense longing for one another.

Dillon smiled at her and said, “I would love to take you in the other room and show you just how much I do love you.”

“I would like nothing better than that,” Clara said. “However, I think that would violate the doctor’s orders about being careful. Besides, there are people waiting in the car outside who would like to hear the good news. I’m still not allowed to drive myself.”

Dillon laughed as Clara went to the door. She motioned to the driver and the passengers in the back seat.

Zeke hopped out of the back seat with Reno on his heels and ran up the walkway to Dillon. Charlie followed in a more stately manner.

Charlie looked at Clara with her eyebrows raised as though to ask, “Well?”

In response, Clara showed her the ring.

“Congratulations,” Charlie said, hugging her friend.

“Ow,” Clara yelped as Charlie hugged her a little too tightly.

Zeke looked at his mom and then Dillon questioningly.

They went inside the house. Zeke sat on the couch next to Dillon.

“Zeke, Dillon asked me to marry him. Do you know what that means?” Clara asked.

“Yes, it means that you guys love each other and want to be together all the time,” Zeke said.

“That’s right. It means that your life will change, too, because Dillon will be around all of the time, since we will all live together,” Clara said.

“It will be like he’s my real dad,” Zeke said.

“Yes,” Clara said.

“I would love to have Dillon be my real dad,” Zeke said.

“Aw, I love you, Buddy. I will be glad to have you think of me that way,” Dillon said.
