“Get out of here. This instant. Before we kill every last one of you,” Raven ordered.

“I think we should do that. Kill every last one of them. Why let them get away?” Kellen argued at her ear.

“I have no idea. What if they stop listening to me as soon as we start trying to kill them again?” Raven whirled on him, exasperated. But it was hard to keep up her anger as blood streamed down his handsome face. “Damn it, Kellen. You’re bleeding everywhere.”

“Sorry?” Kellen said, a wry look on his face.

In seconds the field was empty of Domnua, aside from a few pools of silvery blood that seeped into the ground, and Riker trotted forward, huffing out a breath as he brought his head near Raven’s.

Safe?

Raven realized that Riker was sending her a message, and she nodded to the Alicorn while reaching up to pat his neck.

“Yes, Riker. I think so. I’ll get this one bandaged up. You go check on those chubby babies of yours. Stay on guard though, okay? I don’t want to have to worry about you guys too.”

“Why are you acting like you need to take care of me?” Kellen demanded. “I’m the one in charge here.”

“Says the man dripping with blood. I don’t see a drop on me. Or, if I do, it’s likely yours.” Raven glanced down to make sure that Kellen hadn’t ruined her new outfit.

“What was that voice trick you did? You used it on me once before. It’s time you tell me what your magick is, Raven. I can’t go into battle with an unknown at my side.”

“Seems to me that you just did. And this unknown just saved your sorry arse.” Raven smiled when Riker nickered, seeming to laugh with her, and she took off in the direction of the castle. “Come on, pretty boy, let’s get you sorted.”

“Pretty boy? You think I’m pretty?” Kellen’s voice was caught between pleasure and annoyance and Raven rolled her eyes, tossing him a look over her shoulder.

“Right now? You’re a bloody mess. Let’s find Bianca before you scare the children.”

“You still didn’t answer my question.” Kellen caught up with her, and Raven had to stop herself from reaching out to check his wounds. That was something that a friend would do. And they weren’t friends. They were…well, she didn’t really know what they were. Or why she was here. It was best not to form any real alliances until she understood her role in this world.

Except for the Alicorns, that is. She’d be friends with them all day long.

“I gave you my answer, Kellen. I don’t know what it is. I’ve never known. It justis.”

With that, the royal guard met them, and Kellen was surrounded. It was easy enough for her to slip to the back of the crowd and lean against a stone wall. From there, she’d be able to watch the crowd for any suspicious activities.

Like when Devlin arrived and saw his son was hurt.

Instead of rushing to his side, he sneered and whispered to some of the onlookers, gesturing to where Kellen’s blood was being mopped up. It didn’t take a lip reader to see that he was pointing out why Kellen shouldn’t lead.

“What happened?” Bianca asked, arriving at her side with a slender woman with big eyes and brown hair.

“Domnua attacked.”

Bianca followed Raven’s gaze.

“His father doesn’t seem too fussed about it,” Bianca pointed out and Raven smiled, knowing that despite her no-friends lifestyle, she might just very well like Bianca.

“My thoughts exactly.”

Kellen

Kellen’s blood was raging.

He wanted to act. To dosomething. Not just because his Alicorns had been put in danger again, by the Domnua, but because Raven had been as well. Or maybe it was just the adrenaline kick after a fight, but Kellen wanted to seek Raven out, to pull her close, to sink into her softness.

Not that she was all that particularly soft. She only showed him her hard edges, but he’d caught glimpses of her carefully hidden vulnerabilities. Either way, Kellen was even more intrigued by this woman he’d plucked off the streets of Galway. Who was she really? And what magick did she carry?
