and air breathes life to fire,

We unite with all our worth,

For we shall never tire,

To the Dark Realm we go,

With power on our side,

Fate may play her hand

But true love will abide.

When she sings,

queens will fall,

daughters of blood,

end them all.”

Light flashed, the circle of stones momentarily catching fire, and the earth rumbled beneath them as magick poured like a river of molten gold into the crust of the earth’s core, and then winked from sight. Smiling, Terra released her hands and stepped forward.

“It is done. We go now, to help our sister in the Dark Realm. Imogen and Nolan will go by sea, Sorcha and Torin through the fire portals, we’ll go through the caves, and you, Kellen…”

“The sky portal.” Kellen looked up to where the ravens hovered. “They’ll come with me?”

“That’s the plan. If you fly first, they will follow.”

“We’ll go with you, Kellen.” Seamus came forward and clapped his arm around Kellen’s shoulders. Warmth slipped through him. He hadn’t realized just how much he needed the support.

“While I’m certainly not saying that I have a favorite Elemental…” Bianca looked around at the others apologetically, “but, he does have Alicorns sooo…”

“I don’t blame you.” Sorcha, a petite woman with flaming red hair laughed. “You owe us a ride when this is over, Kellen.”

“When this is over, we’ll have a huge celebration, and everyone can enjoy the Alicorns. If they allow it, of course.”

The ravens began to caw above them, and a shiver danced over Kellen’s skin.

“The time is now.” Terra grabbed Rian’s hand and pulled him toward a path. In moments, everyone had disappeared to their portals.

“We’ll fly with you as well, Kellen. It will give us a good view of what is going on below us,” King Callum said, motioning to where their Alicorns waited. Behind them, hundreds of Air Fae mounted their own Alicorns and took to the sky.

Kellen leapt onto Riker’s back and was already in the air before he was fully seated. His breath caught as they rose, a prayer at his lips.

The Alicorns flew, the stark white of their wings contrasting with the blanket of black ravens, looking like hundreds of lily petals strewn across the surface of dark water. Dark to light.

United.

They approached the portal, a barely discernable shiver of a cloud in the sky, and Kellen took the lead.

“Riker, through the portal.” Kellen leaned close to the Alicorn’s ear. “At any point, if you need to lead your family back, then do so. Do not, and I mean this with every ounce of my being, do not sacrifice them for me. I can fight on my own two feet. Promise me.”

Friend.

“Yes, friend. But family also. Understood?”

The waterfall image projected into his mind and Kellen smiled. When all of this was over, he’d take Riker and Raven there and they would play in the cool waters of the stream, knowing that the world was once again safe from darkness.
