“But you don’t get it! You got to live! You got to drown yourself in drugs and strippers for the better part of a decade. I-I got one night.” I sighed.

In a rare moment of sympathy, Sebastian touched my shoulder.

“You know, this marriage doesn’t need to be where fun goes to die. Just because our parents gave up the concept of joy once they got married doesn’t mean we have to do the same. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to continue to have fun. I mean, hell. I had fun tonight.”

“I had fun, too,” I admitted. Part of me wondered if I would have let Sebastian buy me a drink if he was just another guy at the bar. Maybe he would’ve slipped me his number on the back of a napkin, and we could have gone on a real date instead of succumbing to this antiquarian scheme. Sure, Sebastian could be a jackass, but he was definitely interesting.

I gripped the wall of the elevator. “The movement.”

“Don’t get sick and make a mess.”

The doors opened into his penthouse. “Thanks for your concern.”

“I’m only being practical.”

I stepped onto the white and black marble tile of the entryway. His penthouse was beautiful and nothing like the modern vibe of the building.

The walls were painted a muted white, contrasting nicely with the dark hardwood floors beyond the foyer. Intricate crown molding framed the ceiling, and a grand spiral staircase swept up to the second floor.

“I’m not a fan of minimalism. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. You know what I mean?” He slipped off his suit jacket and let it settle onto an ornate chair. “The bathroom is to the right.”

I headed down the hallway and entered the half-bath. I brushed my teeth using the stock of toothbrushes in the drawer. Sebastian sat, poised and debonair as ever, on one of the armchairs in the living room. A large Persian-style rug covered the hardwood floor. I plopped onto the rug and leaned back against the sofa.

His hungry eyes surveyed my body. I swallowed and broke eye contact, but part of me was intrigued and maybe even a little turned on.

“What’s with all the extra toothbrushes?”

“I have a lot of company.”

I frowned. “Overnight?”

He shook his head. “No one stays the night, but sometimes women need to freshen up before they leave.”

“I don’t want to know what that means.” I looked down at the engagement ring.

“Do you like it?”

His hands rested on the arms of the leather chair. I could see the muscles in his legs through his chic blue dress pants.

“Yes, it’s exactly what I would have wanted …”

“From someone you love?”

I looked into his eyes. “Yes, but I don’t want to talk about that.”

“Have you ever had a boyfriend?”

I blushed and looked away. “I’ve dated, but never anything serious. I hate to say it, but I never really had the time to date when I was in school. I double-majored.”

“Weren’t you in a sorority, though? I was in a frat in college. I know how it goes.”

“Yes, but I was usually the DD most nights. Drinking has never really been my thing. I don’t like how it makes me feel the next morning. So even when I went to parties, I usually made myself a mocktail and danced before dragging everyone else’s drunk asses home. I met a few guys.” I looked up to meet Sebastian’s gaze. “But no one special.”

Sebastian refused to break eye contact as he asked the following question.

“Are you a virgin?”

My cheeks burned. “None of your business.”
